The starting pay for this position is $22.67 and based on experience.

This position may remain open until filled or until receipt of sufficient number of applications.

Responsibilities

This position plans and oversees activities and programs for the Senior Center. Contributes to the effectiveness of services provided to local seniors. Assumes the duties of the Senior Center Superintendent in her/his absence. Performs all responsibilities as needed for managing all Senior Center programs, events and activities.

  • Compiles monthly newsletter.
  • Create brochures for trips and all activity and event correspondence.
  • Plans, schedules and coordinates all Center programs, activities and events (including trips and parties)
  • Responsible for advertising upcoming events and programs.
  • Instructs various classes for Center (including aerobics, ceramics, etc).
  • Drives vehicles to transport clients.
  • Collects fees and makes deposits.
  • Assists with the annual street festival.
  • Manages ceramics budget and funding, from sales to setting prices, and collects monies for ceramics.
  • Directs operations of ceramics for all aspects of the Ceramics and Clay program, teaching and assisting seniors in crafting pieces, pouring molds and preparing them for painting.
  • Answers telephone and greets visitors. Provides information and assistance to patrons.
  • Purchases equipment and supplies.
  • Assists with monthly clothing exchange and other charitable programs.
  • Schedules and coordinates monthly movie and coordinates refreshments.
  • Fills in for Senior Center Superintendent in her/his absence.
  • Assists Senior Center Superintendent with various projects, tasks and duties.
Secondary Functions
  • Assists other Senior Center employees when needed.
  • Fires Ceramic pieces.
  • Orders ceramic supplies when needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Job Conditions
  • Position is primarily in the office with occasional fieldwork.
  • Must maintain a strong driving record for city-insurance purposes and record may be periodically checked by the City.
  • Strong background record required due to accessibility to city property and Senior Citizens.
  • Occasionally work overtime on the weekends and varying hours.
  • Must be able to travel on senior field trip events.
Education and/or Experience
  • High School Diploma required. Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Formal training in ADA compliance and senior studies preferred.
  • Alabama Driver’s license, and good driving record required for transporting Seniors.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL license required to drive city bus for larger groups within one year.
  • Training with ceramic skills and other crafts preferred.
  • Must obtain CPR certification within 6 months.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong teaching and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of common safety practices and ADA accommodation needs and issues.
  • Strong computer skills with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), newsletter software and Internet skills.
  • Strong administrative and clerical skills.
  • Knowledge of office equipment use.
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision.
  • Ability to consistently demonstrate a high level of judgment and discretion required for maintaining confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to learn ceramics, kiln and firing techniques.
  • Strong newsletter editing, developing, layout and writing skills.
  • Skill in interpreting written instructions, guidelines, policies and procedures, catalogs, ADA requirements, laws and regulations relating to Seniors.
  • Skill in listening to understand verbal instructions and information.
Physical Capabilities
  • Work is performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking.
  • Frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
  • Work around heat from kilns and pouring table.
  • Ability to work in an environment where there are temperature fluctuations, noise, poor ventilation, dirt, dust, etc.
  • Ability to see well enough to observe employees, programs and activities, clean required areas and inspect facilities (corrective lenses acceptable).
  • Ability to hear well enough to understand normal conversation, and to use telephone to hear people from a distance.
  • Ability to sit and or stand for long periods of time.
  • Communicate well enough with senior patrons to be heard from a distance.
  • Use of hands and fingers to type, write, file and operate office equipment and program supplies.
