Job Overview
The City of Madera is seeking a Deputy City Engineer. Working under the general direction of the City Engineer, this position oversees professional and technical staff while ensuring safe work practices, regulatory compliance, and strong engineering standards across all assigned projects. The ideal Deputy City Engineer is an experienced civil engineering professional and collaborative leader with strong technical expertise in municipal infrastructure design, construction, and inspection.
Responsibilities- Oversee professional and technical staff.
- Ensure safe work practices, regulatory compliance, and high engineering standards on all assigned projects.
- Manage engineering teams and oversee complex capital projects.
- Develop bids, administer contracts, and navigate public‑sector procurement processes.
- Review plans, coordinate with contractors and partner agencies, and resolve technical challenges with sound judgment.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws, codes, and policies.
- Prepare reports, present recommendations to City leadership, and foster relationships with staff, developers, community groups, and elected officials.
- Professional civil engineering background.
- Experience managing engineering teams and overseeing large capital projects.
- Strong technical expertise in municipal infrastructure design, construction, and inspection.
- Knowledge of public‑sector contract and procurement processes.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Organized, solutions‑oriented, and grounded in public‑sector best practices.
