Summary The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the operation of special motorized equipment in the collection of garbage, yard waste, and bulk waste from commercial and residential properties.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Operates equipment such as rear‑loader garbage truck.
- Operates equipment such as knuckle boom loader.
- Operates equipment such as roll‑off truck.
- Performs pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections.
- Adds necessary fluids for the performance of the equipment being operated.
- Trains other employees in the operation of equipment in an efficient manner.
- Reports mechanical problems with equipment to the supervisor.
- Performs walk‑around inspections as required for CDL drivers to check tires, lights, and look for leaks.
- Collects materials along a predetermined route daily.
- Picks up rubbish, brush, limbs and leaves by hand or with hand tools.
- Picks up trash, stove, refrigerators and other goods to be deposited at the landfill.
- Cleans around trash can areas and containers.
Education, Training and Experience The Heavy Equipment Operator should possess at minimum a high school diploma or equivalent, with at least three (3) years’ experience in operating heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Possession of a valid Georgia Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of the operation and care of such heavy‑duty equipment as rear loader garbage truck, knuckle boom loader, and roll‑off truck.
- Ability to understand and follow quickly and accurately written and oral instructions.
- Skill in the safe operation, servicing, and inspection of specialized heavy equipment.
- Skill in the operation of equipment utilizing hydraulic controls.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and with members of the general public.
- Ability to collect all materials on the route assigned.
