Job DetailsMercer University's Police Department is looking for new Security Guards to work on our Macon, Georgia campus. The position will perform a variety of duties related to the protection of life and property on the Mercer University campus. Assist with prevention of crime, preservation of the public peace, calls for service, and basic security services in accordance with the mission, goals and objectives of the Mercer Police department and in compliance with governing federal and state laws.
The position will interact on a consistent basis with supervisor and co-workers, Mercer employees, students and campus visitors. The Mercer University Police Department adopts a community policing strategy which promotes problem solving techniques to reduce fear of crime and improve quality of life and police services, through a proactive reliance on community resources that addresses crime causing conditions.
- Walk active patrol, run after violators, sit for long periods, climb steps or fences, crawl, move furniture or other heavy objects, write reports, maintain physical control of combative persons, operate police radio, monitor video surveillance system, place tape and cones for traffic flow control, check condition of vehicles and other equipment, lock and unlock doors and gates, perform jump starts on vehicles, escort sick or frightened students, input casebook data, distribute keys for other departments, issue parking decals, assist the Mercer Police department when requested and available, interview persons connected to incidents, transport university personnel and property, clean, direct emergency vehicles such as fire engines and ambulances, and other duties as required.
- Maintain control of tense and/or dangerous situations through psychological discipline and techniques to prevent escalation.
- Adapt to instant changes in situations, from standing still watching something to having to chase someone who has committed a crime.
- Accept unforeseen changes in scheduling to provide adequate coverage of campus.
- Work well with people and have strong communication skills.
- Highly attentive and observant, with the ability to detect abnormal activity.
- Possess knowledge of or have the ability to learn laws and law enforcement practices.
- Possess strong decision-making skills and are capable of judgment in difficult situations.
A high school diploma/GED or Vocational School Diploma and some relevant experiences are required.
