Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at a Level 1 Trauma, academic teaching hospital with a diverse patient population including stroke, brain injury, and post-op cases.

Details
  • Work on a 20-bed Med/Surg Telemetry unit (5 East) within a 637-licensed-bed Level 1 Trauma academic teaching hospital that includes a Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center
  • Patient population includes stroke and brain injury patients, acute and chronic illness, post-op surgical cases, and common med-surg co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, CHF, infections, and electrolyte imbalances
  • RN-to-patient ratio of 1:4–6, supported by LPNs and CNAs per shift
  • 12-hour day shifts (7a–7p), with night shifts (7p–7a) also possible based on scheduling needs
  • Weekend rotation of 6 shifts per 6-week schedule (approximately every other weekend)
  • No on-call or call-back requirements
  • Floating required to all adult med-surg and telemetry units within the facility
  • EMR:
    Epic (experience preferred)
Requirements
  • Active RN license — GA or Compact license required
  • Current BLS and Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR) certifications required; ACLS preferred
  • Medical-surgical national certification preferred but not required
  • Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg Telemetry experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
  • Proficiency in trach care, chest tube management, PIV starts, insulin drips, heparin drips, and titratable drips
  • Experience with IV insertion and care, central line management, wound care, and post-op monitoring
  • Cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation skills required
  • Strong clinical assessment skills appropriate for a Level 1 Trauma environment
  • One professional reference dated within the past year required, from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
Additional Information
  • Unit is described as busy but team-oriented, with strong interdisciplinary support including charge nurses, unit secretaries (7a–11p), hospitalists, intensivists, and RT available 24/7
  • Central Telemetry Unit provides remote monitoring support
  • PICC team available; nurses are responsible for draws from central venous lines
  • Equipment includes Alaris IV pumps, Pyxis medication dispensing, Philips monitors, Glucommander, PCA pain management systems, bladder scanners, and portable vital sign monitors
  • Orientation consists of 1 day of facility orientation with educational modules followed by 2 days of departmental orientation
  • Travelers are expected to work 75% of major holidays; holiday coverage includes Thanksgiving or the day after, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, and New Year's Eve or New Year's Day
  • RTO requests require manager approval
  • RN scrub color is navy blue

  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Candidates who previously held a permanent position at an AHSE facility must have been separated for at least 1 year to be eligible
