Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at a Level 1 Trauma teaching hospital, requiring at least 2 years of Med/Tele RN experience and proficiency with Epic EMR.

Details
  • 12-hour night shifts, 7p-7a, 36 hours per week on a 6-week schedule cycle
  • 23-bed Med/Surg Telemetry unit within a 637-licensed-bed Level 1 Trauma teaching hospital with Chest Pain and Stroke Center designations
  • Patient census ranges from 10 to 23
  • Patient population includes post-op orthopedic (hip, knee, shoulder replacements), bariatric, spinal surgery (TLIF, ACDF, lumbar fusion), and general med-surg patients with common comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, CHF, and infections
  • Specialized procedures include management of cardiac drips (non-titratable), insulin drips, chest tubes, wound vacs, trachs, and PCA pumps
  • RN-to-patient ratio of 1:4–6; supported by LPNs (1:4–6) and 2–3 CNAs per shift

    Pyxis; cardiac monitors:
    Philips
  • Unit equipment includes VS3 and portable vital sign monitors (Dynamap), bladder scanners, Glucommander, external fixators, chest tubes, JP and Hemovac drains, PCA pumps, and portable oxygen systems
  • Weekend rotation: 5–6 shifts out of every 12 (on a 6-week schedule)
  • No on-call or call-back requirements
  • Floating required to all adult med-surg/telemetry units within the facility
Requirements
  • Active GA or Compact RN license required
  • BLS certification required
  • Basic Cardiac Rhythm (BCR) interpretation competency required — candidates must pass an EKG competency exam as part of compliance
  • ACLS preferred
  • Medical-surgical or nephrology nursing national certification preferred but not required
  • Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg Telemetry RN experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
  • Experience at a Level 1 Trauma hospital strongly preferred given the clinical complexity of the unit
  • Proficiency with Epic EMR
  • Skills required include trach care, chest tube management, IV insertion and central line management, Glucommander, insulin and heparin drip management, cardiac monitoring and telemetry interpretation, wound care, and post-op monitoring
  • One professional reference dated within the past year required, from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
  • Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
Additional Information
  • Responsibilities include caring for post-surgical and acute/chronic med-surg patients, care coordination with interdisciplinary teams, discharge planning, and patient education with emphasis on renal and fluid management
  • Unit is supported 24/7 by hospitalists, intensivists, and respiratory therapy, as well as a Central Telemetry Unit for monitoring
  • CNAs assist with vital signs, glucose checks, baths, feeding, ambulation, hourly rounding, and patient transport; a designated hospital transport team is also available
  • Unit secretary on-site 7a–11p; house-wide call secretary available 11p–7a
  • Charge nurse may carry a patient assignment; resource team and discharge nurses float to all units; PICC team available (no general IV team)
  • Phlebotomy is nurse-collected on most units; nurses draw from CVLs
  • Orientation consists of 1 day of facility orientation with educational modules followed by 2 days of departmental orientation
  • Holiday expectations include working one shift of each major holiday:
    Thanksgiving Day or the day after, 12/24 or 12/25, and 12/31 or 1/1
  • RTO requests require manager approval
  • RN scrub color:
    Navy
  • Candidates who have worked a permanent position at an AHSE facility must be separated for at least 1 year before being considered
