License and Certification Qualifications
  • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA)—Level 3.5 or higher, or
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)/National Association for the Deaf (NAD) Certification
Education Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field required.

Experience Qualifications

Two years of interpreting experience required.

Skills Qualifications

Proficiency in American Sign Language and English; ability to convey the equivalent message from sign to voice to sign; clear written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues; and ability to represent Gwinnett County Public Schools.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Serve as the liaison between the D/HH Program and mainstream programs.
  • Refer regular education staff questions or inquiries concerning the D/HH student to the D/HH case manager.
  • Interpret all mainstream classes for D/HH students.
  • Interpret for extracurricular activities as requested by supervisor.
  • Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings as a member of the IEP team when requested.
  • Support the needs of students as determined by the IEP.
  • Remain current in the field of educational interpreting through workshops, professional meetings, interactions with colleagues, and reading current literature.
  • Maintain current credentials and provide evidence to the LEA as requested.
  • Clarify the role of interpreter to assist all parties concerned.
  • Maintain an impartial attitude and guard confidentiality in accordance with the RID Code of Ethics.
  • Participate in staff duties and responsibilities in accordance with local school policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Physical Demands

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods and is also required to talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee may need to use hands to finger, handle, feel, and/or reach; occasionally to stoop, kneel, or crouch; and lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
