- Supports patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) — assists with bathing, grooming, toileting, dressing, and other essential personal care needs while maintaining dignity, comfort, and safety.
- Assists patients with mobility and hygiene — repositions, transfers, ambulates, and utilizes assistive devices in accordance with established procedures and RN direction.
- Obtains and documents routine clinical measurements — records vital signs, height, weight, and intake/output; reports abnormalities to the RN.
- Supports patient nutrition and hydration — assists with feeding, meal setup, and monitoring diet tolerance per prescribed diet orders and RN guidance.
- Maintains a clean and safe patient environment — ensures rooms, equipment, and common areas meet infection prevention standards and are free from hazards.
- Observes and communicates changes in patient condition — identifies variations and provides timely, factual reports to the RN to support clinical decisions.
- Reinforces patient and family education and orientation — reviews safety measures, unit routines, and prepares patients for tests or procedures as directed by the RN.
- Performs clerical and administrative support functions — answers phones, enters basic information into the EMR, retrieves supplies, and supports communication on the unit.
- Manages patient-care supplies and equipment — stocks inventory, ensures materials are available, and maintains cleanliness and proper functioning of equipment.
- Performs competency-validated technical skills — conducts tasks such as 12-lead ECGs, routine venipuncture, and specimen collection under RN supervision and after documented competency validation.
- No additional certifications, registrations, or licenses required beyond enrollment and good standing in an accredited nursing program.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Active enrollment in a recognized accredited nursing program with good academic standing; minimum 2.5 GPA on a weighted 4.0 scale.
- Foundational nursing coursework required to participate in supervised clinical practice and perform Nurse Extern responsibilities; documentation of completion or anticipated completion required before onboarding.
- Foundational coursework typically includes Foundations of Professional Nursing, Physical Assessment and Health, Fundamental Principles and Skills, and Pathophysiology/Pharmacology, or equivalents as defined by the program; verification during onboarding.
- Acceptable verification may include official/unofficial transcripts, letters from the School of Nursing, progression letters, or other formal documentation. If transcripts cannot be provided, alternative documentation may be approved by the Nurse Director, Nursing Education Department, or HRBP.
- Associate- or Bachelor-level nursing degree variations described (see details in original).
- Ability to complete all required orientation, training, and competency validation programs upon hire, including RN-supported instruction for designated skills and procedures.
- Competency in basic fundamentals of nursing as evidenced by accredited coursework.
- Ability to perform approved clinical skills following RN-precepted training and documented competency validation.
- Ability to maintain academic performance standards required for continued good standing in the nursing program.
- Ability to perform essential physical functions of direct patient care; stand and walk for long periods; frequently bend, reach, squat, kneel, and move between positions; assist with transfers and movement of equipment; maintain proper body mechanics.
- Must have adequate vision, hearing, fine motor coordination, and tactile sensitivity to safely observe patients, handle equipment, and respond to alarms; PPE may be required.
