West Physics has an immediate opening for an experienced Health Physicist/Radiation Safety Officer based in Macon, GA. This position requires a solid educational background in health physics, a strong interest and aptitude for learning, and a can‑do attitude with an excellent work ethic. The successful candidate should possess strong leadership, communication, and management skills. This position is best suited to someone with excellent interpersonal skills, outstanding written and verbal communication, the ability to work independently and as part of a project team, and strong technical proficiency.
The ability to exercise high responsibility and autonomy (once trained) is integral to this position. This position may require occasional travel, typically 10 days per month, depending on the number and location of specific consulting assignments. Primary Responsibilities- Answer radiation safety and health physics questions from client personnel.
- Assist client personnel with radiation safety‑related compliance activities.
- Perform nuclear medicine, diagnostic radiology, and industrial and academic radiation safety audits.
- Perform radioactive materials (RAM) licensing activities on behalf of clients, including license applications, renewals, potential enforcement activity, consulting activity, and response.
- Perform dosimetry review, worker and patient dose estimates, and fetal dose estimates.
- Perform source inventory, leak‑testing, and other radiological assay and analysis operations.
- Conduct dose investigations and ALARA reviews.
- Perform shielding designs and conduct shielding verification testing.
- Assist health physicists and senior health physicists with more complex consulting duties.
- Assist medical physicists and senior medical physicists with periodic diagnostic radiology equipment testing.
- Other related duties as needed.
- Bachelor's (B.S.) or Master's (M.S.) degree in Health Physics or a physics‑related discipline (Medical Physics, Nuclear Engineering, etc.)
- Mid‑career health physicists will be considered who have (2+) years of professional full‑time experience in a health physics role that includes medical and applied health physics applications, as well as other areas such as research, academia, or industrial applications (strongly preferred).
- RSO‑eligible: must show evidence of holding a medical radioactive materials license in categories 10
CFR 35.100, 35.200, and 35.300 (or equivalent Agreement State categories) or be immediately eligible for a preceptor to hold such licenses. Upon hire, this position will be immediately appointed to hold licenses for clients as a statutory RSO. - Familiarity and proficiency with basic health physics activities (e.g., survey instrument used, survey technique, leak testing, dosimetry review, etc.) and a willingness and aptitude to master more advanced health physics skills and activities.
- The ability to understand and apply regulations from various State and Federal entities to different client situations and write effective policy and procedures, Radiation Safety Manuals, and user‑friendly forms.
- Solid foundation in radiation physics, radiation biology, electronics, and other areas relevant to equipment quality assurance testing.
- Effective written and oral communication skills, including professional, courteous, and convincing or persuasive in discussions with clients, regulators, and colleagues.
