Major Responsibilities
  • Positioning of patients and proper selection of technical factors and equipment to obtain scans of optimal quality, including use of immobilization techniques. Includes positioning, transferring, and immobilizing patients for procedures to ensure optimal exam quality; operating portable ultrasound equipment as required; assisting physicians with recommendations for optimal studies by suggesting selections for technical factors.
  • Documentation of department records (e.g., inventory of supplies, patient statistics) to ensure adequate supplies and proper patient records. This includes maintaining correct patient records, assembling daily patient schedules and preparing patient folders, preparing ultrasound rooms with necessary equipment and supplies, and operating hospital computer systems as required.
  • Securing pertinent medical history from the patient for each procedure to provide the radiologist with adequate information before film interpretation. This involves obtaining pertinent history, working closely with the radiologist when requested, and maintaining a positive attitude with patients and staff.
  • Compliance with established hospital safety standards to ensure patient and staff safety. Responsibilities include maintaining annual CPR certification, operating all equipment safely according to hospital policies, and applying universal precautions to protect self and others from bodily fluid exposure.
  • Keeping abreast of current skills and developments in the field of ultrasound, and instructing/helping students or fellow technologists orienting in ultrasound.
  • Education and experience required:
    Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program and eligible for ARDMS registry with a minimum of 1 year of clinical scanning.
  • Knowledge, skills & abilities required:
    High degree of technical knowledge to perform specialized ultrasound studies with little assistance from radiologists; ARDMS Registered or registry eligible within 24 months of graduation from an approved sonography program; CPR certification.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to adjust to flexible hours at minimal notice.
  • Ability to work odd hours (late hours on‑call) and respond to emergency call back in minimal time.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to constantly view a video display screen during exams.
  • Ability to perform lifting activities related to patients; lifts up to 35 pounds without assistance; for patient lifts over 35 pounds or when the patient is unable to assist, patient handling equipment is expected to be used with at least one other associate, when available.
  • Recognition of needs and behaviors of all age groups, with evidence of communication skills necessary to interpret age‑specific responses; prior experience with various age groups is preferred.
