Job DescriptionCertification in Media Specialist (P-12) is preferred; however, Bibb County is a Strategic Waiver District. Alternative Certification routes are available to individuals with a degree from an accredited institution.
JOB SUMMARY
Under direction of the principal, plans and administers the school's library media program. Plans and provides direct instruction to students and training to staff. Manages library media center material, facilities, and equipment. Communicates the school library media program to administrators, staff, students, parents and the broader community. Coordinates instructional activities in partnership with school and system goals.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Is aware of the needs of the school's educational program and secure diversified reference materials.
- Leads and guides in the selection of media materials, planning for and securing a basic collection.
- Orders, classifies, catalogs and processes all materials for the media center.
- Assists in the selection of media supplies, magazines and other materials needed.
- Is responsible for mending and repairing books; selecting those sent off to be rebound.
- Assists in the selection and procurement of media equipment.
- Aids in developing suitable media skills for all pupils (using school library instruction, services, and resources in implementing and enriching the total educational program.)
- Teaches information retrieval skills to students.
- Seeks improvement of services through meetings, workshops and other techniques.
- Informs teachers of new materials, proper use of equipment and all services and resource materials available.
- Endeavors to keep accessible to student and faculty all materials pertinent to every subject including materials designed to meet the needs of ESOL, Gifted and other special populations.
- Helps select school media committee and coordinates its activities.
- Submits any reports deemed necessary by the principal, superintendent, or Director of media services. Provides supervision of Media Clerk.
- Exerts leadership to increase understanding of the role of the media center in curriculum development.
- Maintains a program of good public relations at all times by promoting the media center and its services to parents and the community.
- Selects and maintains a collection of materials from print to newest technologies in support of the school and system curriculum/GPS programs.
- Works within the school to plan for new courses of study, or other curricular plans to ensure that adequate resources are available.
- Participates in grade level planning in order to fully implement school media services.
- Creates a learning environment that encourages students to utilize information, develop independent skills and enjoy becoming lifelong readers and learners.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the principal.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Master’s Degree or above in Media Services, Library Education or closely related field;
KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of BOE Policies and Procedures for school library media programs
- Knowledge of effective instructional practices and understanding of the teaching/learning process
- Knowledge of current instructional and research technologies and the ability to integrate these into the library media program and throughout the curriculum
- Ability to work effectively with administrators, staff, students, and community
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills
- Skilled training in the use of technology within the media programs.
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to obtain clearance certificate from GaPSC
- Must possess or meet qualifications for GaPSC certification as Media Specialist
- 195 day work year.
- Salary based on certification and experience; placement on the Georgia Annual Salary Schedule and position supplement(s).
