Is knowledgeable regarding policies and procedures, PPE's, universal precautions, duties listed in the disaster manuals, and MSDS sheets. The patient populations must be considered when assessing job knowledge required from the employee. Demonstrates proficiency in the scrub role and knowledge of skill in applying principles of aseptic technique. Demonstrates knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative technique related to first assisting.

Demonstrates ability to perform effectively and harmoniously as a member of the operative team. Demonstrates ability to recognize safety hazards and to initiate appropriate preventive and corrective actions. Demonstrates skill in the following: handling tissue, using instruments, providing exposure, and providing hemostasis.

• Expected pay for this position is $32.22-$54.40. Actual pay will be determined by experience, skills and internal equity.

• Job Summary
  • Under direct guidance/supervision of the primary operative surgeon, the first assistant will assist in the perioperative case of patients in surgery and perform in other duties as assigned under the direction of charge RN and the Director of Surgical Services.

  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
    
    A graduate from a First Assistant school and certified as a Surgical First Assistant by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. Current CPR certification is required.
• Abilities, Interests and Temperaments
  • Verbal ability is needed to interpret and understand the physicians' orders and communicate with other caregivers, regarding care of the patient, as well as to present educational information to patients, staff and the public as needed.
  • Numerical ability is needed to ensure correct dosages of medication and ensure correct sponge and instrument counts.
  • Clerical perception is needed to assess patient and correctly interpret data.
  • Finger dexterity is needed for, but not limited to, handling surgical instruments, giving IM medications, assembling equipment and different physical exams.
  • A preference for scientific and technical activities is required to set up and adapt medical equipment to the patient's needs and apply the physiological affects of the therapy and procedures to the patient's clinical state.
  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills to assess a situation and be able to adapt to changes.
  • A preference for the use of processes and techniques is necessary to follow policies and procedures and to ensure standards of care.
  • Ability to adapt and prioritize during emergency situations.
  • Must have the ability to work with a variety of patients of all populations (e.g. developmentally appropriate care, cultural diversity, patients with pain, victims of abuse or neglect, and diagnosis or procedure specific such as patient with congestive heart failure or cesarean delivery).
