Advanced Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist – Critical Care/Surgery
To act as an advanced clinical specialist in the assessment and treatment of critically ill patients, including those requiring mechanical ventilation and non-invasive ventilation (NIV). This role contributes to accurate clinical diagnosis and holistic case management.
Work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team, interpreting diagnostic tests and making appropriate onward referrals and recommendations.
Lead the physiotherapy service for patients in Critical Care, High Dependency Unit, and General Surgical Wards s includes operational planning, coordination, evaluation, and service development initiatives, ensuring consistency with clinical specialist standards.
Manage and coordinate physiotherapy on-call and weekend services, assessing staff competency, identifying training needs, and delivering education in line with ACPRC guidelines for surgery and critical care.

Main duties of the jobClinical Responsibilities
- Provide expert physiotherapy advice and interventions for complex patients in critical care and surgical settings.
- Work autonomously and contribute to MDT decision-making and discharge planning.
- Undertake advanced assessments, develop treatment plans, and monitor progress.
- Ensure safe use of equipment and prescribe/adapt as required.
- Participate in on-call and weekend rotas.
Education & Training
- Deliver training to healthcare professionals, patients, and carers.
- Supervise junior staff and students, including induction and competency development.
Leadership
- Manage a specialist caseload and coordinate service delivery.
- Provide clinical leadership and support recruitment and induction.
- Contribute to service development and improvement.
Audit & Research
- Lead audits and research projects within specialist practice.
- Apply research to improve clinical outcomes.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain HCPC registration and professional standards.
- Engage in CPD and appraisal processes.
- Develop clinical pathways and guidelines.
- Promote patient safety and high-quality care.
