The Bus Operator is responsible for transporting people between various places including on and off campus facilities for schooling, work, and across state lines. They drive regular routes and transport passengers on chartered trips, operating cars, trucks, and buses up to 60-foot articulated buses that can carry more than 100 passengers. This position requires operating vehicles safely in a variety of conditions.
Transit Bus Operators perform pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections and basic maintenance. During the summer, operators may work for other departments within the Facilities Management Division (Maintenance, Custodial, Design & Renovations, Grounds) to provide work when transit activity slows or halts. Operators complete general tasks independently, exercising good judgement and discretion. This is a part‑time, non‑benefited position.
- Available for school closings, delays, shutdowns, and emergencies including clean‑up after severe weather incidents. Needed for Commencement (May), Orientation and Move‑in (August) weekends, and other scheduled events. Must work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.
- Report to work on time and perform duties assigned by the Director of Transit Dept.
- Familiarize with standard Transit Department concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Follow established safety driving procedures and techniques for routes and chartered trips to ensure passenger safety.
- Conduct basic vehicle maintenance: check tires, oil, lights, and keep the vehicle clean and presentable at shift start.
- Pick up and drop off passengers at designated locations.
- Follow a planned route according to a schedule.
- Assist passengers with disabilities to board and disembark.
- Obey traffic laws and state and federal transit regulations.
- Interact with passengers professionally, courteously, and helpfully.
- Keep passengers informed of possible delays.
- Answer questions about schedules, routes, and transfer points.
- Respond calmly and promptly in stressful situations, maintaining calm operation of the bus.
- Report accidents or traffic disruptions to a central dispatcher and follow alternate route directions.
- Dust, wipe, and polish windows, doors, handrails, and furniture such as desks and bookshelves.
- Empty office trash cans and recycling bins, sweep, vacuum, and mop floors.
- Perform duties of a Landscape Tech I.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies, processes, products, services, and industry benchmarks.
- Work effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.
This position requires a high school diploma or GED. Minimum 1+ years of related experience is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in the transit bus driving field. A Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a passenger endorsement and air brakes endorsement is mandatory, along with completion of a training program. Bus operators must meet hearing and vision requirements, and hold a valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License with a Passenger and Air Brake endorsement.
Certifications obtained while employed by Liberty University will be reimbursed back upon voluntary termination within the first 12 months after acquisition. Employees must effectively communicate verbatim and in writing, demonstrate strong organizational and computer skills, and have experience driving buses on fixed routes (preferred). Ability to lift up to 50+ pounds and function in typical Virginia climate conditions is required.
A desire to work collaboratively, grow and improve, and remain calm under stress is essential. Employees must be courteous, detail‑oriented, self‑motivated, diligent, and trustworthy. Use of a personal vehicle (or LU vehicles) is required for travel in the performance of essential functions. A clean DMV record and liability insurance are required.
