Overview

The Fire Alarm Tech II is responsible for installation, troubleshooting, programming, testing, and inspection of fire alarm systems campus wide. Works independently and exercises good judgment and discretion.

Responsibilities
  • As essential personnel: you are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and emergencies including cleanup required because of severe weather incidents. Performs snow removal activities as assigned. Facilities Management Division employees are essential to the overall success of Liberty University and its day-to-day functions, especially during campus events. Must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.
  • Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the Fire Alarms Supervisor and/or Maintenance Manager.
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing job duties and while operating related equipment, including protective eyewear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves, steel-toed shoes, respirators/masks, reflective safety vests, and sunscreen.
  • Wear a harness with a lanyard and other PPE if operating aerial lifts to perform and complete assigned jobs.
  • Inspect buildings for code compliance; identify and correct hazards.
  • Perform annual inspections and preventative maintenance services on fire alarm systems.
  • Install pull stations, smoke detectors, and duct detectors.
  • Complete work orders on a daily basis.
  • Be responsible for assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • Install, modify, maintain, program, and repair fire alarm systems.
  • Be able to be on a 7-day on-call rotation.
  • Be able to work 1st or 2nd shift.
  • Perform a variety of tasks as assigned.
  • Provide maintenance and repair for Life Safety Systems such as Fire Alarms, Generators, Emergency Warning System, and Elevators for Liberty University at any time.
  • Provide maintenance and repair for Auxiliary Systems such as the JF Library ASRS and Bowling Alley for Liberty University at any time.
  • Maintain stock for all assigned systems.
  • Maintain documentation for assigned systems.
  • Process work orders as needed.
  • Comply with all applicable health and safety regulations, policies, and established work practices.
  • Remain abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services and leading industry performance benchmarks.
  • Work effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU’s mission.
Qualifications, Credentials, And Competencies

This position requires a high school degree or GED. Must have 2+ years of experience as a Fire Alarm Helper or related experience and a good understanding of Fire Alarm Systems. Experience with Fire Alarms in the Maintenance or Construction environments is preferred. Must have an understanding of hand tools such as screwdrivers, cutters, electrical strippers, etc. Basic knowledge in Voice Evac operations is preferred but not required.

Must be able to understand and follow instructions and work under limited supervision. Must be able to work well with the public and co-workers and present a positive attitude. Exceptional self-management. Desire to work with a team to accomplish goals. Urgency to grow and improve. Knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and excellent computer skills are required.

Clean and professional appearance. Must be courteous, detail-oriented. Self-motivated, diligent, trustworthy, with strong organizational and planning skills and well-developed communication skills. Must be able to lift 50+ pounds and perform duties of the Fire Alarms trade in the Virginia climate. This position might require the use of and operation of aerial lifts or be willing and able to obtain aerial lift certifications, operate, and work from various aerial lifts and heights.

Certifications obtained while employed by Liberty University at the expense of the employer will be reimbursed back to the University upon voluntary termination (resignation) for the first 12 months after acquiring it. Proof of a valid Virginia driver’s license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required.
