Overview
The Clinical Registered Nurse (RN) II in Behavioral Health is responsible for managing individualized patient care by promoting and restoring patients' health in accordance with medical and nursing plans of care and established policies and procedures. The RN II collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary team members in the development, execution, and evaluation of the multidisciplinary plan of care. The RN assumes a full patient assignment and can plan, analyze, intervene and set goals for patient care accordingly.
This nurse provides nursing services to patients and families in accordance with the scope of the RN as defined by the Virginia Board of Nursing. The RN maintains a safe care environment for patients and delivers quality care.
- Clinical - Assessment:
Conducts individualized patient assessments and ongoing assessments, prioritizing data collection based on the patient’s condition and in accordance with policies and protocols. - Clinical - Planning:
Develops, modifies, and integrates an individualized care plan that incorporates the medical plan of care and standards of care; establishes measurable patient goals in consultation with the patient, family, and healthcare team. - Clinical - Intervention:
Performs treatments and therapeutic nursing interventions as ordered by the provider and according to the patient’s plan of care; recognizes potential problems and responds to urgent or emergent risk; initiates emergency measures as appropriate; collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to ensure appropriate interventions. - Clinical - Evaluation:
Evaluates patient responses to care and initiates changes to the interdisciplinary care plan to improve outcomes; documents findings and progress toward problem resolution. - Clinical - Patient
Education:
Identifies learning needs and educates patients and families; ensures understanding and involvement in the plan of care. - Self and Peer Learning:
Maintains competency, attends required educational programs, and pursues opportunities for clinical development and potential charge nurse responsibilities. - Collaboration:
Coordinates care, supervises delegated tasks, and reports changes in patient condition to appropriate personnel. - Service Recovery:
Participates in service recovery and uses appropriate resources to resolve complex situations and conflicts. - Resource Utilization and Stewardship:
Supports appropriate resource utilization and mentors staff in orientation and development; may train for or serve as a charge nurse. - Improvement
Activities:
Participates in quality assurance activities, identifies practice concerns, and contributes to quality improvement efforts. - Research/Evidence Based Practice/Quality Improvement Projects:
May participate in research or QI projects and communicate findings to peers. - Ethics:
Maintains confidentiality, protects patient autonomy and rights, and acts as a patient advocate.
Education
Minimum:
Diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing
Education Preferred
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Work Experience
Minimum:
At least One Year of Nursing (RN) Experience
Licenses & Certifications
Registration as a registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia and/or holds a compact license to practice in Virginia;
Basic Life Support (BLS);
Additional specialty requirements after hire per department standards (e.g., Advanced Cardiac Life Support – ACLS).
Note: Specific specialty requirements may apply by unit or department (e.g., Cath Lab/Electrophysiology, Operating Room, Critical Care, Endoscopy, PACU, Interventional Radiology, Birth Center, Centra Specialty Hospital, Outpatient Ambulatory Surgery, Pediatric Advanced Life Support where indicated).
