Description
Performs routine semiskilled and heavy manual work in the care and cleaning of City of Lynchburg buildings and facilities, by performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesEnsures the delivery of excellent customer service by performing responsible functions in the safety, security, maintenance, and regular care of City facilities. Assists in the coordination of various services in cooperation with internal and external customers.
- Utilizes appropriate interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a diverse customer base, some of which may occasionally display emotions such as confusion, frustration, or anger.
- Performs the following regular custodial cleaning functions in your assigned buildings:
- Basic sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping of floors.
- Cleaning carpets with extractor.
- Spot cleaning carpet and upholstered furniture.
- Operate a wet/dry vacuum.
- Cleaning and disinfecting urinal, toilets and lavatories.
- Refilling soap, towel, and toilet tissue dispensers.
- Wash windows, walls, woodwork and bathroom fixtures using ladders.
- Gather and dispose of trash from interior and exterior of assigned buildings; gather paper for recycling.
- Dust office furniture, partitions, high and low ledges, moldings, and Venetian blinds.
- Assist with cleaning parking decks.
- Reports repairs beyond capabilities of custodial workers to supervisor or crew leader.
- May perform routine security to include locking and unlocking doors and deactivating alarm system of assigned building, and reports unusual observations to supervisors.
- Monitors cleaning of stairwells, elevators, restrooms, hallways, and meeting rooms.
- Assists customers in accessing services.
- Cleans and maintains the sidewalks and steps adjacent to assigned buildings.
- Maintains flexibility to work all city buildings as needed as well as occasionally working outside normal hours.
- Loading and unloading cleaning & polishing equipment.
- Loading and unloading materials from truck or van.
- Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies, materials, and equipment in custodial closets.
- Responds to special requests from user agencies.
- Responds to emergencies such as snow, flood, wind storms, etc.
Other duties provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.
When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

Qualifications- Minimum
Education and Experience
Required:
10th Grade and some building cleaning experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. - Relevant background checks must be completed and approved.
- Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
- Expected to work a total of 4 hours per day.
- Those 4 hours can be scheduled anytime between 10:30 AM and 8:00 PM.
