Are you passionate about keeping people safe in their homes? Do you want to make a real difference in your community? We are looking for a proactive, compassionate, and organised individual to join our Prevention Team.

This role offers a 12-month opportunity for a Home Safety Advisor to help us expand our work with the Early Years Alliance’s Luton Safe at Home scheme. Safe at Home and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service have worked together since 2009. We visit vulnerable families in their homes across the Luton area to deliver Child Safety advice and fit safety equipment alongside Home Fire Safety visits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Safe at Home team, confirming and delivering Home Fire and Safety Visits as appropriate using a risk-based approach.
  • Provide safety advice and guidance, installing assistive technology and other safety equipment appropriate to the needs of the occupier and wider family, reducing the level of risk in the home.
  • Carry out Home Fire and Safety Visits to people identified as being at risk of safety, fire, or health-related concerns. Where appropriate you will liaise with multi‑agency partners to reduce risk and support the well‑being of the residents you visit.
  • Make relevant needs-based referrals to partner agencies and ensure stakeholders have the required information.
  • Comply with the Service’s Safeguarding Policy and facilitate appropriate referrals to support vulnerable residents.
  • Maintain knowledge of local support services and build relationships with partner agencies.
  • Manage your diary, record Home Safety activities, and ensure referrals are processed and communicated to relevant partners.

About you

You will have:

  • Some experience of working in a fire, or injury prevention/health promotion capacity, risk management, customer service role or voluntary sector organisation.
  • Some experience of working in situations requiring the ability to empathise whilst remaining professional, confidential and impartial.
  • Some experience with working efficiently to organise own time and maintain safe working practices.
  • Some experience, understanding and commitment to principles of community fire safety and well-being issues, particularly relating to risk reduction and safety education.
  • Able to demonstrate a high standard of oral and written communication with the ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice in accurate written and spoken English.
  • Able to work flexibly, efficiently and reliably both independently and within a team structure.
  • Possess emotional resilience and the ability to remain calm in potentially distressing situations.
  • GCSE in Maths and English at grade 4 or above or equivalent, or a relevant vocational qualification at Level 2.
  • Current full driving licence (manual or automatic) with no pending issues.
  • Physically capable of performing appropriate lifting, carrying, loading and unloading of goods in compliance with Manual Handling Regulations and training.
  • Ability to use power and hand tools to install equipment and assistive technology.
