Luton Sexual Health is seeking a Consultant to join the team of four Consultants and one Specialty doctor. The appointee should demonstrate wide experience in all aspects of sexual health including HIV inpatient and outpatient management, Genito-Urinary Medicine and contraception provision. There will be opportunity to develop a subspecialist interest and to support the further development of the Luton Sexual Health service.

The post holder, in conjunction with existing consultants, will have responsibilities for advising, screening, diagnosing and treating patients with STIs including HIV infection and specialist contraception services including LARC. They will contribute to the continued development of integrated sexual health services in line with national policy, local commissioning arrangements and evidence-based best practice. The appointee will help with innovations and service developments to achieve local/national targets, develop/expand outreach services, increase access and optimise cost efficiency.

The appointee will work with other consultants to provide clinical supervision for the multidisciplinary team and may take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including training of specialty trainees and nursing staff.

The post holder will share equitable responsibilities with colleagues, contribute to governance of the department, provide cover for inpatient referrals and on‑call telephone advice to support Saturday clinics (1:4). The post holder will cover for colleagues during periods of absence and maintain continuing responsibility for patient care and departmental function.

Job responsibilities

A 10 PA week consists of 8.5 PAs direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activity (SPA).

The post holder may attend regional audit and specialty group meetings and local network meetings virtually as core members or cover as appropriate. Job planning will reflect department needs; an initial plan review occurs at 3 months and annually thereafter, with additional PAs agreed by mutual consent. Flexible sessions for teaching, administration, management and clinical governance will be discussed and agreed.

This appointment is for 10 Programmed Activities per week: 8.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1.5 SPA. There will be about 3 outpatient clinics per week (2 integrated sexual health clinics including LARC procedures and 1 HIV clinic). Remaining PAs cover patient-related administration, CME/CPD, audit, clinical governance, teaching and training. Out-of-hours telephone advice is required on Saturdays 09:00–17:00 on a 1:4 basis.

Provision of cover for Saturday Sexual Health clinics may be required occasionally.

Job location and service

Luton Sexual Health service is based at Arndale House, Luton. The service provides care in both acute and community settings with open-access face-to-face and telephone appointments and offers training and education opportunities.

Qualifications and experience
