Position OverviewThe Operations Leader - Animal Care promotes and ensures efficient and effective operations of the Companion Animal Department and drives sales of aquatic pets, reptiles, birds and small companion animals. The leader coaches and mentors all Pet Care Center partners on processes that support and drive the guest experience and animal care, manages operations scheduling, and leads a high‑performing team that delivers the department’s budgeted sales goals, gross margin, animal and merchandise shrink targets.
They also support all aspects of the Pet Care Center’s business in accordance with Petco operational standards and safety procedures.
- Utilize business acumen to measure, analyze and diagnose business trends and implement business improvement plans.
- Ensure the health and well‑being of live animals by providing correct care in accordance with established Petco standards, policies and procedures, including completing hourly animal health checks and wellness cards.
- Adhere to Veterinary Protocol for all sick animals.
- Process register transactions to create a great experience for each guest.
- Be proficient within our selling model and support guest interactions as needed.
- Implement and execute Companion Animal Operations and Aquatics (where applicable) through training and coaching of partners on Animal Care, Aquatics, Companion Animal Maintenance, Ordering, all Regulatory Compliance, CAPI, HAHC, CAPC and Vet Care/Relationships.
- Efficiently order live animals to maximize sales, margin and inventory; analyze department inventory data and recommend improvements.
- Maintain operational standards in the department.
- Ensure all animal‑related maintenance tasks are completed as outlined on the Maintenance Task List.
- Achieve high presentation standards in aquatics and companion animal areas.
- Partner with the Operations Leader – Merchandising to ensure proper in‑stock merchandise levels.
- Handle and document Adoption Animals properly.
- Maintain knowledge of PCC Sales and Margin reports and data.
- Lead, provide feedback, and coach all PCC partners in quality service and task performance.
- Work with PCC Leaders to maintain proper partner scheduling for in‑stock goals and guest service levels during peak hours.
- Apply talent management skills for recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, coaching and succession planning.
- Provide quick and courteous service to all guests by determining needs, sharing product knowledge and suggesting suitable merchandise.
- Support Omni Channel execution through training and coaching on BOPUS, Ship‑from‑store, Curbside, Endless Aisle, and overall Guest Experience.
- Act as Leader on Duty, supporting Pet Care Center execution, training, communication, maintenance of initiatives, programs, legal compliance, policies, procedures, safety practices and promotions.
- Train, coach, and develop Pet Care Center operations partners in close partnership with the sales team.
- Promote a positive leadership culture of teamwork, inclusion and collaboration.
