We are seeking an Ophthalmic Technician who will assist the Ophthalmologist by performing ocular examination and testing and supporting clinical operations. - Obtain and concisely record an accurate patient history, including chief complaint, past ocular history, family history, systemic illness, medications, allergies and drug reactions, and social history.
- Perform elements of the preliminary eye exam and ancillary testing, including visual acuity testing at distance and near, Ishihara or HRR color vision testing, Amsler grid testing, Schirmer testing, and measurement of current lens power with a lensometer.
- Evaluate pupillary reactions, including afferent pupillary defect.
- Perform basic slit lamp exam, including evaluation of anterior chamber depth.
- Measure and record intraocular pressure using Goldmann applanation, Tono-pen, or iCare tonometry.
- Properly operate common non-automated and automated ophthalmic equipment, including IOL Master, brightness acuity testing (BAT), potential acuity meter (PAM), autorefractor, corneal pachymeter, Humphrey visual field, Goldmann visual field, and ocular coherence tomography (OCT).
- Assist physician chairside as a scribe.
- Apply proper ocular dressings and shields.
- Properly instill eye drops, following divisional protocols.
- Properly assist physically or visually disabled patients.
- Assist with pre- and post-op care, including possible surgical assisting with outpatient procedures.
- Perform routine instrument maintenance on all ophthalmic equipment.
- Stock examination rooms in assigned area.
- Ensure medication expiration dates are current.
- Disinfect and maintain examination rooms and equipment.
- Possess general medical knowledge, including basic microbial control, ocular anatomy and physiology, systemic diseases, ocular diseases and ocular emergencies.
- Must complete currently required JHMI courses and abide by relevant regulations, such as self-learning educational packets, HIPAA regulations, Conflict of Interest, annual review paperwork, training in software such as Epic and Forum.
- Other duties that may be assigned (back-office support, medical records coordination).
- High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
- One year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician. Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date. CPR certification also required.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
