Professional Duties1. Planning
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons
- Teaching, according to pupils’ educational needs, including setting and marking work to be carried out by pupils in school and elsewhere
- Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils
2. General
- Promoting the general progress and well‑being of pupils and any class assigned
- Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters and future careers
- Making records of pupils’ personal and social needs, except where it might compromise the teacher’s position
- Communicating with parents and external bodies approved by the employing authority
- Participating in relevant meetings
3. Assessment/Reporting
- Contributing to oral and written assessments and reports, except where it might compromise the teacher’s position
4. Staff Development / Professional Development
- Participating in staff development schemes and performance reviews
- Reviewing teaching methods and programmes, and attending professional development arrangements
- Co‑operating with the Principal on course development and pastoral arrangements
5. Discipline / Health and Safety
- Maintaining discipline and safeguarding health and safety on premises and during authorised activities elsewhere
- Participating in curriculum and organisational meetings, including pastoral arrangements
6. Public Examinations
- Preparing pupils for public examinations, assessing pupils and recording and reporting such assessments
- Co‑ordinating pupils’ presentation and supervision for examinations
7. Review and Development of Management Activities / Administration
- Contributing to the selection, appointment and development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers
- Co‑ordinating or managing the work of other teachers
- Participating in administrative tasks related to curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school
- Managing or supervising support staff, ordering and allocating equipment and materials
- Attending assemblies (subject to the provisions of Article 22)
- Registering pupils’ attendance and supervising pupils before, during or after school sessions
8. Number of days / Hours of work
Full‑time teachers are available for teaching on up to 190 of 195 working days in a year and for a maximum of 1,265 hours in a year, exclusive of preparation, marking and travel time. Teachers may not be required to teach for more than 25 hours per week in a primary or special school and 23.5 hours per week in a secondary school.
A 30‑minute break between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm (or 2:30 pm for nursery schools) is required.
The job description is a guideline and may be updated. Other duties of a similar nature and appropriate to the grade may be assigned from time to time.

Essential CriteriaQualifications / Professional Membership
- Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland
- Hold a degree which has prepared the applicant to teach Science as their main subject
Experience
- Demonstrable experience of using a range of teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of pupils
Other
- Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post
