Description Children’s Health of Carolina, PA is excited to announce the upcoming opening of our Children’s Health Urgent Care location in Lumberton! We are currently seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Medical Lab Assistant to join our clinical team. This role is essential in supporting accurate diagnostics and timely patient care in our fast-paced urgent care environment.

    Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Rotating Saturdays: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Key Responsibilities
  • Sample Collection and Preparation:
    Collect and prepare samples from pediatric patients for testing; ensure proper labeling, sorting, and organization of specimens.
  • Testing and Analysis:
    Conduct standard laboratory tests and experiments; operate and maintain laboratory equipment; record and analyze data, ensuring precision and accuracy.
  • Quality Control:
    Implement and adhere to quality control protocols; calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments; monitor and document any deviations from standard operating procedures; report to the Lab Director when QC and QA may dictate a procedural change.
  • Patient Interaction:
    Explain procedures to children and their families to ease anxiety; ensure a child-friendly and supportive environment during sample collection; collaborate with pediatric healthcare providers to coordinate care.
  • Documentation:
    Maintain detailed and accurate records of all tests and procedures; prepare reports summarizing findings and results; ensure compliance with regulatory requirements; review reports from reference lab daily and communicate abnormal results to the ordering provider; document all tests sent to reference labs and verify timely return of results.
  • Safety And Compliance:
    Follow all safety guidelines and protocols, especially those tailored for pediatric care; maintain a clean and organized work environment; dispose of hazardous waste according to established procedures; keep current with CLIA regulations and implement changes as needed; perform other duties as assigned.
  • Collaboration:

    Work collaboratively with other lab technicians, pediatricians, and nurses; provide support for ongoing pediatric research projects; participate in team meetings and contribute to problem-solving discussions; act as courier to reference lab when needed.
Requirements
  • Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field and/or Phlebotomist Certification; specialized training or coursework in pediatric care is a plus.
  • Experience: Prior experience working in a pediatric laboratory setting is preferred; familiarity with standard laboratory equipment and techniques; previous experience with intravenous blood draws (venipuncture).
  • Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent attention to detail; proficiency in data entry and record-keeping; good communication and teamwork abilities; ability to work independently and manage time effectively; compassion and patience when working with children.
  • Certifications: Relevant certifications (e.g., ASCP, CLIA) are a plus;
    Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is advantageous.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods; ability to handle and operate delicate instruments; manual dexterity for handling small lab equipment and samples; may require lifting and carrying of light to moderately heavy objects.
  • Work Environment: Pediatric laboratory environment with exposure to chemicals, biological materials, and other hazardous substances; use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory; occasional extended hours may be required.
