Position: Registered Nurse (Oncology-Chemotherapy Certied Infusion Nurse)

Overview

The Amarillo VA Health Care System is seeking a full-time Oncology/Infusion Registered Nurse for the VA Clinic in Lubbock - Texas. The Outpatient Staff Registered Nurse will deliver knowledge based care to assigned clients per VA policies and guidelines.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • English Language Proficiency
  • In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f) - no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: ACEN or CCNE
  • OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program
  • Upon achievement of a State license - appointment on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program

  • OR Foreign graduates: possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing
  • Credit for foreign nursing education higher than an associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized evaluation service
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted nursing registration in a U.S. state/territory/COMMONWEALTH or District of Columbia
  • Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: may be appointed at entry step on a 120-day temporary appointment while pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years)
  • Preferred Experience:

    BSN preferred
  • Minimum of 1 year experience required in Chemo-Infusion
  • ACLS certified
  • OCN or ONS/ONCC Chemo certified
  • Experience providing high risk IV infusions such as chemotherapy, blood and blood products, and other non-chem infusions
  • Grandfathering Provision: current VHA 0610 employees meeting the qualifications on the standard effective date are considered to meet requirements

Duties
  • Demonstrates integration of biopsychosocial concepts, cognitive skills, and technically competent practice while providing care to clients; assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care based on age-specific components
  • Coordinate care focused on patient education, self-management, and customer satisfaction across the continuum of care
  • Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to influence care outcomes; works with Veterans served by Hematology/Oncology and other specialty services as needed
  • Be chemotherapy certified and maintain certification while working in Chemo clinic
  • Recognizes abnormal vital signs, notifies the provider, and documents per policy
  • Assist the provider with data gathering, chart reviews, and documentation
  • Assist the Hematology/Oncology provider with Veteran physical exams or procedures as needed
  • Set up for CVT clinics as needed, ensuring connectivity and correct meeting/host numbers
  • Before infusion, ensure a consent is present in the chart when required
  • Adhere to chemotherapy/infusion administration directives and locate unit-specific procedures
  • Communicate with patients via secure messaging and manage pending patients in the Message Manager within required time frames
  • Coordinate with outside facilities to obtain treatment-related information as needed
  • Manage required screenings, clinical reminders, documentation, scheduling, and encounter opening/closing
