Position Description
Employees in this classification provide patient care management to an assigned clinic in the areas of clerical and clinical duties. In the clinical setting, the employee receives direct supervision from a physician or nursing supervisor in either oral or written form. In the office setting, the employee receives direct supervision from the department administrator. Work is performed under usual office and clinic conditions, and may be stressful when working under emergency conditions.

Major/Essential Functions

The Department of Family & Community Medicine has several clinics that achieve the mission of TTUHSC’s School of Medicine: providing care for a broad geographical region’s patient population. Family Medicine has several clinic locations - Pavilion, Grand Expectations, UMC Health & Wellness, and TTU’s Student Health Services. These primary care clinics are an exciting place to work. This department is fast-paced, team-oriented, and a work environment where patients always come first.

  • Welcoming patients warmly with compassion and enthusiasm.
  • Listening carefully to patient needs presented face to face or over the telephone and communicating clear and accurate information in response to all members of the health care team
  • Implementing teaching plans for patients and their families with well-defined health learning needs.
  • Reporting data, identifies and reports alterations in patient responses to assist in the identification of problems and formulation of goals/outcomes and patient-centered plans of care in collaboration with patients, their families, and the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Working collaboratively with other health care team members to ensure patient needs are met and clinic operations are efficient.
  • Communicating with patients via telephone per clinic protocols.
  • Preparing and operating necessary equipment and instruments for examination, treatments, and procedures.
  • Assists with or performs exams and procedures and documents intervention in EMR.
  • Taking and recording accurate vital signs and measurements.
  • Communicating patient data using EMR to support decision-making to improve patient care.
  • Maintaining inventory of supplies in examination and procedure rooms.
  • Participating in the identification of patient needs for referral to resources and facilitating continuity of care.
  • Assisting in determining the physical and mental health status, needs, and preferences of culturally, ethnically, and socially diverse patients and their families.
  • Assisting the Nursing Team Leader with the development and implementation of clinic goals and objectives, to facilitate improved patient outcomes.
  • Managing refill requests and administering medications to patients following policies and procedures for medication management.
  • Completing Annual Nursing Core Competency Training and Skills Fair.
  • Participating in emergency preparedness drills in the department.
  • Attending nursing staff meetings.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a hospital, ambulatory clinic, academic, or community-based setting.
  • CPR/BLS Certified.
  • Electronic Health Records (EHR) experience. Epic preferred.
  • Experience in scribing.
  • Speaks Spanish fluently.
  • Experience in collecting specimens for point-of-care testing.
  • Experience in patient assessment and intake.
  • Medication administration and reconciliation.

Occasional Duties
Clinical personnel will have a “home” where they will primarily be assigned, but may be asked to cross-cover in any of our other clinic locations.
