Position DescriptionThis position is responsible for leading and directing the operational activities of the Accounting Services department, including developing and maintaining accounting policies and procedures, planning, organizing and coordinating the year-end close process, overseeing reporting functions, budgeting and authorizing expenditures, and hiring, training, and retaining accounting staff. Under executive direction, performs highly varied administrative duties involving the use of independent judgment and professional skills.

- Manages and is responsible for the operational activities of the Accounting Services department
- Conducts periodic financial analysis to ensure the integrity of financial data
- Ensures accuracy and compliance with accounting principles, standards, guidelines and reporting requirements
- Ensures financial processes, policies, and procedures are compliant with federal, state and local regulations
- Establishes goals and objectives for the Accounting Services department
- Establishes schedules, priorities and standards for achieving departmental goals
- Oversees the preparation of various reports including the University’s Annual Financial Report (AFR) and other federal and state reports
- Prepares ad hoc reports as requested for accounting and administrative use
- Oversees responses to audit deficiency reports and implementation of audit recommendations
- Oversees and participates in hiring, training, and development of staff
- Performs other duties and completes other projects as assigned
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting
- Must hold an active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license for Texas or have met all requirements to obtain licensure in the state of Texas with full licensure required within twenty‑four (24) months of hire.
- Financial reporting experience in a Texas Higher Education setting
- Experience in governmental/fund accounting
- Prior experience with grant management and related federal/state regulations, including Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards (2
CFR 200) - Knowledge of USAS (State of Texas accounting system)
- Experience using Cognos or other similar data querying/reporting tools
- Knowledge of Banner finance system
- Experience in planning, organizing and prioritizing a large amount of work to meet required deadlines
Bachelor's degree required. Seven years of progressively responsible management experience is required. Education beyond the bachelor's level may substitute for required experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
