Bachelor's degree in social work or equivalent. Minimum:
High school diploma with a credential or certification in social work, human services, family services, counseling or related field. If applicant does not have an acceptable credential or certification, it must be obtained within 18 months from hire date. - Skills in public and human relations
- Public speaking skills
- Community resources knowledge
- Ability to deal with pre-school children, parents, school officials, and the public
- General office skills
- Computer knowledge
- Typing rate of 35 w.p.m.
The role of the Family Support Specialist is to help families attain goals. The primary goals are to educate families on how to access community resources, to increase each family member's involvement in their children's education, and to help each family become a functional unit within the community.
Major Duties- Act as an advocate, a supporter of the children and families enrolled in the program, both within the center and the larger community
- Assist in completing any and all types of records as required by the Head Start Performance Standards
- Assist in establishing any and all training sessions for staff, parents and students as required by the Head Start Performance Standards
- Attend any and all training sessions for staff, parents and students as required by the Head Start Performance Standards
- Assist students, families, and staff in becoming knowledgeable of community resources
- Assist in securing Head Start service oriented appointments for students, parents and staff
- Assist in establishing and training any and all committees as required by Head Start Performance Standards
- Assist with the recruitment and enrollment process for students and families
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Start Director
- Ability to work in variable environmental conditions, travel by car, van, bus, or plane, work alone or with others in a positive and productive manner
- Maintain emotional control, and understand and maintain confidentiality
Performance of this job will be appraised in accordance with Board Policy DNA. This job description/appraisal form is the instrument to be used for appraisal of this position. Appraisal is a continuous process designed to improve the quality of performance and may affect the recommendation for employment. A performance scale from 5 to 1 will be utilized. 5 = Clearly Outstanding;
