Associate/Full Professor in Automation and Robotics Position Description

The Industrial, Manufacturing and Systems Engineering (IMSE) department invites applications for a full-time, 9‑month senior position at the rank of associate professor or professor to begin in Fall 2026. The department seeks applicants with expertise in automation and robotics and research and teaching interests in areas including, but not limited to, advanced manufacturing technologies, human‑AI‑robot teaming, and mechanical simulation. Candidates must have a terminal degree in industrial engineering or a closely related field, a strong record of scholarship, and a proven capability to bring externally sponsored research to Texas Tech University.

Service to the department, college, and university is expected, including program‑building and commitment to extra‑curricular activities. Applicants should be eligible to work in the United States and should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels within teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

About the College

The Whitacre College of Engineering serves approximately 5,100 undergraduate and 1,050 graduate students and is supported by 224 faculty and instructors. The college includes departments in Chemical Engineering, Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Industrial, Manufacturing and Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering.

About the Department/School/Area

IMSE maintains a dynamic faculty actively funded by agencies such as NSF, DOD, and NIST. Faculty have won awards such as the INFORMS Optimization Society Young Researchers Prize and the INFORMS Computing Society Harvey J. Greenberg Research Award. The department supports research in Energy, Water, Engineers in Medicine, Infrastructure, Nanotechnology, Big Data/Visualization, and the CASFER NSF Engineering Research Center.

Major/Essential Functions

Applicants should have experience working with diverse student populations at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels across teaching, research/creative activity, and service.

Faculty Qualifications
  • Terminal degree (Ph.D.) in industrial engineering or a closely related field.
  • Expertise in current practice, pedagogy, and theory in automation and robotics, as evidenced by a research statement, teaching statement, and/or samples of written scholarship.

Access to critical infrastructure requires a comprehensive background check and compliance with state and federal regulations. Ongoing employment depends on maintaining eligibility for access and successful completion of periodic security reviews.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Record of high‑impact, peer‑reviewed publications and external funding.
  • 5+ years of university‑level teaching experience, including undergraduate and/or graduate courses.
  • Evidence of sustained involvement (over 5 years) in institutional service such as student recruitment, curricular and/or program‑development activities, and leadership of extra‑curricular activities.
