JOB DESCRIPTION FOR UPPER SCHOOL TEACHER
Classification: Exempt
Reports To: Head of the Schools of Logic and Rhetoric
Purpose The purpose of this position is to educate upper school students (6th through 12th grades) using classical methods and a biblical worldview in order to prepare students with excellence to diligently pursue God’s truth, knowledge and wisdom in order to winomely and persuasively communicate their thoughts both orally and in writing.
Summary The Upper School Teacher provides instruction in an educational environment where students defend a love for God’s created order as they explain the truth, goodness, and beauty of His world through methods consistent with the classical approach to learning. The focus is on teaching students how to form clear, eloquent arguments and to communicate and defend these ideas via a written and oral thesis at the end of the senior year.
Accordingly, most classes are discussion-based with an emphasis on sound logical and rhetorical principles across all disciplines. The Upper School Teacher will lead, instruct, disciple, and mentor students in a manner consistent with the School’s Statement of Faith and the Portrait of a KPA Teacher. The teacher will partner with parents in the education and spiritual development of their children and will partner collegially with other School employees and actively pursue intellectual and professional development.
Supervision Received and Exercised The Upper School teacher receives direction from the Upper School Head, Assistant Upper School Head, and occasionally from the department chair. The Upper School Teacher must exercise judgment that is in keeping with the School’s philosophy of education, beliefs and values, and with the approved curriculum. The Upper School Head or designee will offer instruction, advice, direction and mentoring.
The work is reviewed regularly and consistently. The Upper School Teacher exercises functional supervision over students and classroom environment.
- Spiritual Leadership Study the Bible, demonstrate a commitment to Christian living, and model KPA’s Statement of Faith.
- Lesson Planning, Preparation and Presentation Demonstrate understanding of pedagogy, establish a classroom environment that follows classical methodology, implement the approved program, develop lesson plans, revise syllabus with Upper School Head approval, meet entry deadlines, and establish clear standards.
- Student Learning Convey information using a variety of modalities, integrate new vocabulary, articulate interrelations among subjects, provide feedback, assess learning, mentor, and maintain records.
- Classroom Management Apply school policies, establish and enforce behavior standards, maintain a safe environment, manage behavior, handle safety procedures, and prioritize tasks.
- Communication Engage students, parents, colleagues, and community; maintain professional relationships; communicate proactive updates and support parents.
- Professionalism Demonstrate commitment and loyalty, maintain a consistent demeanor, promote servant leadership, accept feedback, pursue professional development, and comply with all policies.
- Disciple of Jesus Christ who models a love for God through obedience to His Word.
