Overview
Operates various types of heavy equipment engaged in the construction, repair, or maintenance of county roads. Also operates recycler, conducts routine maintenance checks on vehicles and equipment, transports materials to and from work sites; and directs traffic at construction sites, as needed.
Responsibilities- Drivers and operates following equipment to include, but not limited to tractors with mowing machine and loader attachments; skid loaders with attachments; compaction rollers; excavators; asphalt maintenance units; backhoes; dozers; motor graders; and any other standard light and heavy equipment used by the county.
- Assist or oversee flaggers to monitor traffic during road repairs; set out signs and cones to divert traffic around construction areas according to TMUTCD standards.
- Maintain records of mileage, servicing, minor maintenance, equipment hours, unit numbers, and destinations of equipment assigned. Estimate and recommend to supervisor materials needed on a given project; record time and materials used. Identify and recommend equipment needs for each assigned project; request needed tools, equipment, supplies, and materials.
- Follow blueprints to ensure compliance with established standards on roads, culverts, and drainage for maintenance and construction. Incorporate standard construction and maintenance techniques to produce a finished project or product within the required specifications.
- Maintain an accurate daily record of team performance, including timekeeping, materials utilized, equipment deployed, and other job site issues.
- Perform general construction and maintenance duties, such as excavation for drainage ways and cutting brush.
- Be responsible for pre- and post- vehicle/equipment inspections to ensure quality and safety.
- Perform work with hand tools, including digging trenches, filling excavations, mixing concrete, cutting down trees and brush, and removing driftwood and debris from culverts.
- Direct traffic at construction sites.
- Drive tractor-trailer truck, dump truck, water truck, oil truck, pickup truck, or other trucks for hauling materials to construction or repair sites.
- Operate roller or other heavy equipment as required when paving roads.
- Operate front-end loader or track loader to load/unload materials and equipment.
- Operate other heavy and light equipment, including rough dozer, rotary broom, chip spreader, rough carpenter, vibrating and steel wheel rollers, backhoe, fencing erector, road sweeper, concrete finisher, and other equipment used in the construction and repair of county roads.
- Assist in road base preparation and sub grading tasks prior to paving, including finish blading.
- Assist with clearing of brush, traffic control, and cleaning of drainage ditches.
- Demonstrate equipment operation techniques to Equipment Operators.
- Assist with patching, tamping, packing, and leveling dirt, asphalt, or other materials during pothole repair, reconstruction of road shoulders, and crack sealing.
- Perform other work as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS: Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent. Three (3) years of related and increasingly responsible experience in construction, maintenance, or repairs of roadways, bridges, and operating heavy and light construction equipment; or any combination of education and experience equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to perform the duties and responsibilities of this job successfully.
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with a good driving history. Prefer CDL driver’s license with endorsements.
