As a Residential Counselor, you will provide direct support to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a small group residential setting or an individual living arrangement. You will work with the people we serve, their families, friends, employers, and other support staff to transform their lives by building independence skills or enhancing each person's quality of life.
Responsibilities- Assist individuals in the home in becoming fully integrated into their communities, and develop and maintain friendships.
- Assist individuals to access community-based support and resources.
- Plan recreational and social activities that promote social inclusion and the emotional well‑being of individuals.
- Empower and support individuals in the home to make choices, advocate for themselves, and be involved in decision‑making about their supports and lives.
- Support individuals with assistive technology and adaptive equipment to enhance communication and independence.
- Assist individuals in securing, maintaining, and growing work, volunteer, and other community engagement opportunities.
- Encourage and support individuals and their families in maintaining strong partnerships with staff and other stakeholders.
- Provide training and support, including rehabilitative interventions, behavioral interventions, fire & safety regulations, appointment scheduling, money management, ADLs, grocery shopping, meal planning, cooking, household chores, use of generic resources, and related areas.
- Perform hands‑on tasks to facilitate implementation of support plans.
- Provide transportation as necessary.
- Assess the physical and emotional status of individuals and report changes to the supervisor.
- Monitor individual funds as needed.
- Maintain records, including behavior and academic data, progress notes, incidents, programs, and routine activity logs.
- Procure, store, administer, document, and dispose of medication in accordance with MAP requirements and regulations.
- Communicate with program nurse, case managers, and the Visiting Nurses Association.
- Participate in mandated training and staff meetings.
- Ensure compliance with internal and external regulatory policies and safety procedures.
- Maintain home safety and general housekeeping, including snow shoveling and trash removal.
- Comply with corporate policies, including safe work practices, workers’ compensation, and universal precautions.
- Complete paperwork and logs such as communication logs, community membership logs, and activity schedules.
- Provide shift coverage as needed in other homes or programs.
- Act as a human‑rights advocate, provide physical intervention or first aid during emergencies, and serve as a reporter to the Disabled Persons Protections Commission.
- Assist in developing, implementing, and documenting treatment and clinical programs.
- Perform additional related duties as required.
