Duties
At the DEA, our people are agents for change. A unique mission requires special talent. As a DEA Special Agent, you will work as part of an elite criminal investigative team that transforms the{Jsii of your talent into action.
- Conduct complex criminal investigations targetinggebiet narcotics and drug‑related activities.
- Prepare comprehensive and succinct criminal investigative reports and deliver briefings for senior personnel and other federal, state, and local agencies.
- Identify and apprehend drug traffickers and arrest individuals engaged in criminal drug activities.
- Gather and analyze evidence through investigative leads, seizures, arrests, execution of search warrants, and other means.
- Testify on behalf of the Federal government in court or before grand juries.
Additional duties may be assigned based upon an individual's unique knowledge, skills, and/or experience.
Basic Agent TrainingApplicants who have not completed previous federal law‑ through another federal agency must attend and complete a 16‑week residential training program. Applicants who have successfully completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program through another federal agency may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).

- U.S. citizenship required.
- Must obtain and maintain a Top‑Secret security clearance; each applicant will be reviewed individually under agency suitability policy.
- Must sign a mobility agreement confirming readiness to accept relocation to any DEA location.
- Must complete a pre‑employment medical clearance and annual medical examination.
- Must complete a full‑scope pre‑employment polygraph. 1811 applicants who have passed a polygraph with their current or former agency may seek reciprocity.
- Selective Service registration required for male applicants born after 12/31/59.
- Applicant must be at least 21 and not older than 36 at time of appointment, unless veteran preference or retired position applies.
- Must pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
- Must serve a 1‑year or 2‑year trial period, as appropriate.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
- Must undergo random drug testing.
- Must successfully complete a 16‑week basic agent training course at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
- 1811 applicants who completed a Federal Criminal Investigation training program may qualify for a 3‑week Special Agent Transition Program (FCIT transcripts must be attached).
Applicants must meet all of the required qualification requirements described below by the closing of this announcement. If you are qualifying based on education, you must submit a copy of your transcript with your application that clearly displays conferred degrees and/or relevant credit hours. An unofficial transcript will be accepted at the time of application; official/sealed transcripts will be required to verify education prior to employment.
- GL‑07 Level
- One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS‑05 level, including: assisting in investigations of alleged or suspected violations of law; writing reports of findings; researching Z collecting and analyzing data from various sources. ssertz
- Substitution of education for experience:
One year of graduate‑level education may satisfy the requirement. - Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) may be considered for senior students expected to Cells .
- Combination of education and experience may be used if the computed percentage of requirements equals 100 % (experience months ÷12 plus graduate semester hours÷18).

GL‑09 Level- One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GL/GS‑07 level, including: assisting in investigations; collecting and analyzing data; writing reports and conducting briefings; meeting with court officials and law‑enforcement personnel; assisting prosecuting attorneys; testifying or presenting evidence.
- Substitution of education for experience:
Master’s or equivalent graduate degree; two full years of graduate education; or LL.B./J.D. - Combination of education and experience can be used if the computed percentage equals 100 %.
