Job Description
Title: Adjunct Instructor, English Unit: DCE Adjunct Faculty Department: Liberal Arts, English Reports to: Dean of Liberal Arts Date: November 4, 2025

General

Summary:

This posting is an "Open Pool" position. While there may not be immediate openings, when a position becomes available, the hiring manager will consider applicants from this pool as needed. Middlesex Community College has instituted courses for students in developmental, corequisite, Composition 1 and Composition 2. ENG 092:
Reading, Writing, & Reasoning is an integrated developmental reading and writing course for students whose reading score is below that required for ENG 101. For those who reach the ENG 101 eligible reading score but need support with writing, a co-requisite model is employed; students enroll in ENG 101 and co-enroll in ENG 109 for an additional 3 credits with the same instructor (ALP).

Professional development is available for those unfamiliar with these models.

Duties And Responsibilities:
  • Teach one or more sections of integrated reading and writing, co-requisite or standalone Composition 1, or Composition 2;
  • Explore new pedagogies that accelerate and contextualize developmental instruction, such as the Reading, Writing and Reasoning (RWR) accelerated learning model and the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP);
  • Develop and use student‑centered pedagogies;
  • Develop and use assessment strategies that maximize the developmental learning process and measure student learning outcomes;
  • Develop and apply instructional methods that engage students of varying learning styles and abilities;
  • Develop and apply technology in and out of the classroom;
  • Use Blackboard Learning Management System to post syllabi, assignments, and grades;
  • Participate in the end‑of‑the‑term grading session of a common final assessment.
  • Fulfill terms of the faculty contract as set out in the Agreement between the Board of Higher Education and the Massachusetts Community College Council/Massachusetts Teachers Association for the Division of Continuing Education (DCE).
Requirements:
  • Master’s degree in English, or M.Ed. with a specialization in Reading or Language Arts;
  • Classroom teaching of English, reading, college composition or developmental English in high school or college;
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching, continuous professional improvement, developmental education, inclusive pedagogies and use of technology to support student learning;
  • Willingness to work collegially with a diverse body of faculty and staff;
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the role of the community college in higher education.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3‑5 years of teaching experience in a community college;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Blackboard LMS, and PC.
Salary Information:
  • DCE adjunct faculty members are paid in accordance with the DCE salary step schedule which is as follows:
    • Step 1 – $1,397 per credit
    • Step 2 – $1,487 per credit
    • Step 3 – $1,585 per credit
    • Step 4 – $1,688 per credit
