Summary
The Infection Control Physician is a Per Diem MD/DO responsible for providing specialized infectious disease clinical care and serving as the health center’s subject matter expert for infection prevention and control. This role supports patient safety, workforce protection, and regulatory compliance through direct patient care, antimicrobial stewardship, infection control policy development, staff education, and collaboration with clinical, quality, and public health partners.

Clinical Care Responsibilities
- Provides direct patient care for individuals with acute and chronic infectious diseases in the outpatient FQHC setting, including evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.
- Manages antimicrobial and other anti-infective therapies, including initiation, adjustment, and deprescribing, in accordance with antimicrobial stewardship principles.
- Interprets microbiology and other diagnostic results, ensuring timely follow-up and communication with patients and care teams.
- Provides curbside and formal infectious disease consultation to medical, behavioral health, and dental providers.
- Utilizes laboratory and diagnostic services as appropriate to support patient care.
- Refers patients for specialty consultation or higher levels of care as clinically indicated.
- Collaborates with leadership and nursing to develop, implement, and maintain infection prevention and control policies, plans, and standard operating procedures.
- Provides expertise on standard and transmission-based precautions, respiratory protection, PPE use, environmental cleaning, and isolation workflows.
- Participates in the Infection Control Committee, including review of surveillance data, incident reports, and quality improvement metrics.
- Advises on emerging infectious disease preparedness and response, including testing strategies and coordination with local and state public health authorities.
- Provides subject matter input on vaccination policies, TB screening, post-exposure management, and occupational health protocols.
- Develops and delivers education and training to clinical and non-clinical staff on infection prevention practices and emerging infectious threats.
- Supports implementation of evidence-based infection prevention guidelines appropriate for outpatient and community-based care settings.
- Collaborates with quality improvement and risk management teams on audits, investigations, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Serves as a liaison with external partners, including public health departments, hospitals, and community agencies, related to infectious disease and outbreak response.
- Demonstrates understanding of and commitment to the mission, values, and patient-centered philosophy of Lowell CHC.
- Participates in department meetings and required trainings.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
- Medical Degree (MD or DO).
- Board certification in Internal Medicine with subspecialty certification in Infectious Diseases (ABIM or AOBIM), or equivalent training and experience.
- Current, unrestricted licensure by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.
- Eligible for credentialing and privileging at Lowell CHC.
- Demonstrated experience in infection prevention and control in ambulatory or community-based settings.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Commitment to patient confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Prior experience working in an FQHC, community health center, or community hospital serving medically underserved populations.
- Experience participating in or leading infection control committees, outbreak investigations, or antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.
