Overview
LMPD Traffic Guards escort children across streets and highways before and after school hours, direct traffic at street intersections near county school drive entrances to assist buses arriving and departing, and direct the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Responsibilities- Record license plate numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic laws and report infractions.
- Monitor and direct the actions of children to ensure safe crossings.
- Escort children across streets, roads and highways.
- Direct traffic at street intersections near county school drive entrances.
- Expedite traffic flow at county school locations to assist buses arriving and departing.
- Direct the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic during emergencies, special events and general congestion.
- Performs related work.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony or have any criminal action pending against them.
- Misdemeanor convictions will be considered on an individual basis.
- Must submit to a pre-employment drug screening.
- Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test.
- Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA.
- Applicants who have illegally bought or used marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within six months of application will be disqualified.
- Applicants who have illegally sold marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within one year of application will be disqualified.
- Applicants who have illegally bought, sold, or used any controlled substance or narcotic drug, other than marijuana, without a prescription within six years of application will be disqualified.
- Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work.
- Must be able to maneuver in and out of heavily travelled roadways/intersections.
- Must be able to handle or grasp a stop sign overhead while directing pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
- Must be able to handle and move barricades and cones into and out of roadways/intersections.
Will be exposed to environmental elements such as heat, cold, rain, and snow.

Please note that candidates must be available to work between 6:00 AM - 9:55 AM and/or 1:30 PM - 4:55 PM.
This position is Part Time and Seasonal:
20 hours per week - Nine (9) Months Per Year
Please note:
After being in the position for some time, Traffic Guards are able to bid into positions that offer more hours, as those positions come available, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. There is also an increase in the rate of pay for Traffic Guards who take on more hours. Additionally, Traffic Guards who are in those positions with more hours are also eligible for medical, vision, dental, and additional Metro benefits.
Traffic Guards also have the opportunity to work special event details, where they receive a higher rate of pay.
