Position: Bore Operator (Travel Crew)

Our Large Program division (CNS) is looking for travel crews to complete work around the Louisville, KY market. Travel crews will provide support for ongoing projects in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. The travel crew will work as a team to perform underground fiber construction (plow, drill, bore, vac truck, tie & vault).

Job Summary

The Directional Bore Operator will be responsible for operating the directional drill. They will set up and complete the drilling of variable-sized underground holes and pull back the required conduit. They will work with an Outside Plant Project Manager and Locators to complete job requirements from start to finish on outside plant projects including digging boring pits, directional boring, pulling back of conduit, splicing of conduit sections, pulling fiber through conduit, setting hand holes, back filling, seeding, core drilling, and potholing.

Responsibilities
  • Set up equipment including the drill, water tanks, and grounding of the machine.
  • Operate drilling equipment and various other construction equipment.
  • Confirm bore path with locator or leads before drilling.
  • Drill the predetermined path to the exit point.
  • Maintain communication with the locator to confirm the location of the drill head.
  • Assist in potholing and remediation.
  • Assist with setting hand holes and completing tie-ins.
  • Assist with installing proper pulling gear and hook‑up product.
  • Conduct post-job quality checks.
  • Perform duties in standard and high-risk areas as applicable.
  • Drive or operate construction equipment when licensed and authorized to complete daily tasks.
  • Maintain, clean, and inspect company vehicles and equipment to ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Perform required pre- and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment and complete required paperwork.
  • Comply with safety procedures while driving and on the job site.
  • Perform other general duties as directed.
Required

Skills & Qualifications General
  • Ability to comply with the Operator’s Manual for equipment and vehicles used.
  • Ability to understand and follow all quality and safety policies and procedures.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL Class

    A) with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Self-motivated, safety- and quality-focused, and production-minded.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and communicate with other craft and labor workers.
  • Ability to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions (heat, cold, snow, ice, rain, etc.).
  • Ability to perform physical activities requiring use of arms and legs, movement, reaching, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
  • Ability to work long hours if needed.
  • Ability to travel for remote business requirements within Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Indiana.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug test and background screening.
Technical
  • At least 1 year of directional drilling experience.
  • Ability to drill a predetermined path to the exit point.
  • Ability to pothole and assist with hand holes.
  • Ability to conduct post-job quality checks.
  • Experience completing tie-ins and pulling gear and hooking up products.
  • Strong knowledge of underground utilities.
  • Knowledge of the telecommunications industry and construction practices.
