Position: Animal Control Officer I - Trainee U31

Overview

Summary Objective:
The purpose of this position is to train with and assist Animal Control in duties. This class works under close supervision according to set procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Assists in the explanation of procedures, laws, codes, and ordinances, and provides information to the public.
  • Assists in the capture and impoundment of animals.
  • Inspects motor vehicle and cleans equipment to ensure its safe operation, and replenishes necessary supplies, fuel and fluids.
  • Cleans and disinfects kennel cages, pens, and transport units using water hose, floor brush and chemicals.
  • Assists and trains in entering information and codes into the computer, retrieves information, generates routine daily reports, and corrects computer data entry mistakes which are discovered.
  • Assists in the transportation of personnel and equipment.
  • Trains to receive and transmit codes, messages and information by two-way radio.
  • Trains on the operation of a motor vehicle to patrol and assigned geographic area of the county.
  • Trains and assists in the investigation of complaints from the public concerning unrestrained, unlicensed, uncontrolled, abandoned, dangerous, nuisance, injured, or sick animals and collects evidence and other pertinent information.
  • Trains and assists in the preparation and issuance of uniform citations, violation notices, warnings, quarantines, and search warrants.
  • Trains and assists in the capturing and impoundment of animals with a net, rope, trap, food, other equipment, or other technique or method.
  • Trains and assists in the communication and explanations to pet owners on the animal control operations, procedures, laws, fees and services, traps, pet owner responsibilities, and general care of animals.
  • Refers the public to other governmental agencies for services and assistance.
  • Trains and assists with the verification of licenses to ensure that animals and business establishments are correctly licensed and inspects residential properties before animals are approved for adoption.
  • Trains and assists in the securing of small animals in air kennel on mobile unit or large animals in livestock trailers and transports them to the center facility.
  • Trains and assists in preparing investigative and other reports and compiles evidence should legal action be taken and testifies in court.
  • Trains and assists in performing euthanasia by injection under the direction of a licensed veterinarian.
  • Trains and assists in administering vaccinations and dewormer of animals on intake as needed.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
  • One (1) year of animal care, customer service, or animal handling experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Minimum Requirements
  • He or she is a citizen of the United States and is twenty-one (21) years of age or older.
  • He or she has never been found guilty of a misdemeanor or felony.
  • He or she has not within a period of two (2) years hired himself or herself out, or otherwise as an active participant in any labor dispute.
  • Must possess EBI (Euthanasia By Injection) certification by the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners or obtain within six (6) months of employment.
  • Must complete KACCA (Kentucky Animal Care and Control Association) training. within 6 months of hire.
  • Successful completion of an in-house training program and field evaluation within 10 months of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
