Job Description Summary

About the Unit

8 Heart & Lung is a 16-bed cardiac surgical intermediate unit that specializes in the care of pre‑ and post‑operative cardiac surgery patients.

Essential Functions
  • Conduct systematic, continuous and comprehensive assessments of patient health status from admission to discharge across the care continuum, ensuring patient safety and collaborating with the healthcare team, patient, and family.
  • Independently administer medications per licensure authority, assess and reassess medication effects, and document administration promptly.
  • Plan care with patients and families using current scientific knowledge, nursing theory, and care standards, integrating multidisciplinary data for continuity and appropriate teaching.
  • Identify and prioritize patient problems based on assessment data, safety considerations, goals, and preferences.
  • Implement nursing interventions to meet patient and family needs, demonstrating competence, sound judgment, and adherence to the chain of command.
  • Assess, conduct, and evaluate patient and family teaching outcomes, reflecting sensitivity to age, learning needs, and cultural background.
  • Evaluate care through systematic reviews of patient/family responses, revise the plan collaboratively, and intervene to prevent adverse events.
  • Advocate for patients and families, respect rights and preferences, prepare for discharge, and obtain feedback to promote satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with unlicensed assistive personnel under appropriate monitoring and delegation, following regulatory and legal requirements.

Other Functions
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and appearance, accountable for actions and outcomes.
  • Orient new team members and supervise students in assigned duties.
  • Act as relief charge nurse when needed.
  • Maintain professional competency through continuing education, licensure, and professional activities.
  • Participate in evidence‑based practice activities, such as journal clubs, and discuss care outcomes with colleagues.
  • Actively participate in the healthcare team, communicate constructively, resolve conflicts, and provide peer review.
  • Perform duties cost‑effectively, avoiding waste while maintaining quality of care.
  • Maintain compliance with company policies, procedures, and standards of conduct.
  • Comply with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to protect confidentiality.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Education
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program (required).
    • All new‑hire Associate Degree Registered Nurses must begin an approved BSN program within one year and complete it within three years.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program (preferred).
Experience
  • All new RN graduates must participate in the Nurse Residency program and successfully complete all activities (required).
  • Two years of hospital patient care experience (preferred).
Licensure
  • Current Kentucky RN licensure or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky (required).
Certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) accredited by the AHA (may be required for specific clinical areas).
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) accredited by the AHA (may be required for specific clinical areas).

Additional or specialized certifications may be required or preferred based on unit needs.
