Job DescriptionThe Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) is a competent registered nurse that will deliver nursing care to patients of varying age groups by utilizing the nursing process and nursing practice standards. The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) uses:
- Nursing Practice Competencies to intervene to achieve safe, optimal patient and family centered care health outcomes;
- Leadership Competencies to coordinate patient care and communicate with the care team;
- Professional Profile Competencies to develop professionally as a life-long learner, and
- Practice Outcomes Competencies to evaluate care based on evidence, the UofL Health quality model, and patient safety goals.
The Registered Nurse (Hospital-Based) demonstrates competency caring for complex patients and participates on the care team to improve the quality of care in the clinical area.
Essential Functions- Under the supervision of a clinical nurse manager, provides nursing care to patients, and conducts systematic, continuous and comprehensive assessments from admission to discharge, addressing age, gender, spiritual, cultural, physical, psychosocial and patient preferences; collaborates with the healthcare team, patient and family; uses safety surveillance to prevent adverse outcomes.
- Independently administers medications per licensure authority, assesses and reassesses effects, and documents administration in a timely manner per policies and regulatory requirements; adheres to patient safety guidelines.
- Plans care with patient and family using current knowledge, theory, and standards; creates individualized plans and integrates data from the multi-disciplinary care team to assure continuity and teaching.
- Identifies and prioritizes patient problems based on data, safety considerations, goals, and preferences; implements interventions to meet needs.
- Implements nursing interventions to meet patient and family health care needs; demonstrates judgment and safety.
- Assesses and evaluates outcomes of patient and family teaching; tailors to age, learning needs and cultural background.
- Evaluates care by reviewing patient/family responses; revises plan of care with the care team to promote outcomes; recognizes variances and prevents adverse events.
- Advocates for patient and family; prepares for discharge; seeks feedback to improve satisfaction.
- Works collaboratively, with monitoring and delegation of unlicensed staff, per regulatory requirements to ensure safe care.

- Orients new team members and supervises students as needed
- May act as relief charge nurse when unit needs arise
- Maintains professional competency through continuing education and licensure
- Participates in evidence-based practice activities and improves care delivery
- Collaborates with the healthcare team using core behavioral standards; participates in peer review
- Performs duties cost-effectively while maintaining quality of care
- Maintains compliance with all policies and standards of conduct; HIPAA compliance
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Associate’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program is required
- All new-hire Associate Degree RNs must start an approved BSN program within one year and complete within three years
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (preferred)
- All new RN graduates participate in the Nurse Residency program
- Two years of hospital patient care experience (preferred)
- Current KY RN licensure or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky (required)
- Basic Life Saving (BLS) by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required)
- PALS (may be required for specific clinical areas)
- ACLS (may be required for specific clinical areas)
