Farmington seeks an engaging and mission‑driven Manager of Visitor Experience to ensure that every guest enjoys a welcoming, informative, and meaningful encounter with this historic site. This part‑time role oversees public tours, docent engagement, educational programming, and the daily operations of the Museum Store. The Manager plays a central role in interpreting Farmington’s history, supporting volunteer docents, and strengthening community connections through thoughtful programming and partnerships.
Hours for this position are Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 am – 3:30 pm. Additional hours may be requested for special events at night or on weekends. The rate of pay is $24 hour.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKSVisitor Services & Tour Operations- Coordinate and manage the weekly public tour schedule (Tuesday–Saturday) and arrange special tours for school groups, community organizations, and private groups.
- Serve as the primary support for volunteer docents, ensuring they are well‑prepared, confident, and equipped to deliver accurate, engaging tours.
- Lead docent training on Farmington’s history, interpretive themes, and guest‑service expectations.
- Maintain high standards of hospitality, ensuring a positive and inclusive visitor experience for all guests.
- Collaborate with partner organizations to develop public programs that illuminate the stories of nineteenth‑century Kentucky and broaden community engagement.
- Continuously refine and update Farmington’s interpretive content as new research and historical insights emerge.
- Support the creation of educational materials and experiences that enhance visitor understanding of Farmington’s historical significance.
- Oversee daily operations of the Museum Store, a satellite of Carmichael’s Bookstore, ensuring an inviting retail environment.
- Manage inventory of period‑related merchandise, Farmington‑branded items, and locally crafted gifts.
- Coordinate with Carmichael’s Bookstore on product selection, restocking, and merchandising strategies.
- Train and support volunteers assisting with store operations.
- Schedule, assign, and communicate with volunteer docents and store volunteers to ensure adequate coverage for tours and retail operations.
- Foster a positive, supportive volunteer culture that reflects Farmington’s values and commitment to community engagement.
- A genuine interest in history, cultural interpretation, or museum education.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an outgoing and visitor‑focused approach.
- Experience working with volunteers or leading teams in a customer‑facing environment.
- Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic setting.
