The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) is in Louisville, Kentucky and serves as the largest Sheriff’s Office and fourth largest law enforcement agency in the state. Its approximately 250 sworn, 60 civilian and 75 volunteer Reserve Deputies perform its main duties of providing court security, serving court orders, and collecting property taxes. The members of JCSO also serve the community by supporting the work of local charitable organizations and providing a positive presence that ensures the safety of residents of Jefferson County.
POSITIONOVERVIEW
Telecommunicators of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office are fully certified emergency communications professionals. The JCSO Communications Unit transmits critical information, tracks the status of personnel, and at times takes emergency calls from the public. The unit is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There are three shifts where openings are filled based on the operational needs of the agency.
This position requires computer skills, listening skills, and the ability to multi‑task and handle stressful situations.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
- Must be U.S. citizen.
- Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have honorable discharge from military, if applicable.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony – misdemeanors are considered on a case‑by‑case basis.
- No use of marijuana in the last 1 year, no use of illegal controlled substances in the last 6 years.
Upon academy graduation, a 3 year employment contract is required by the graduate.
SALARY/BENEFITSCertified hires are eligible for up to 10 years credit towards pay and leave accrual.
Salary starts at $28.78/hour ($56,112.94/yr) and increases with years of service: 3 Years $30.51/$59,502.43, 5 Years $31.67/$61,754.62, 10 Years $33.41/$65,143.97.
Employees participate in the Non‑Hazardous Duty retirement under CERS offered the KPPA. JCSO pays 100% medical premiums for single coverage, and 90% for other plan levels. Competitive plans for vision and dental. Optional deferred compensation and life supplemental life insurance. $20,000 Basic Life Insurance provided.

Upon hire, recruits begin working in the Communications Center on‑the‑job training while waiting for a spot in the academy.
Recruits are sent to the DOCJT Telecommunications Basic Academy located in Richmond, Kentucky. The live‑in academy is 4 weeks and consists of 164 hours of classroom and practical instruction. Recruits may go home on weekends and holidays.
