Description

Kentucky Derby Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization that sits on the front steps of historic Churchill Downs Racetrack. It is one of the premiere attractions in the Louisville region, celebrating the tradition, history, hospitality and pride of the world‑renowned event that is the Kentucky Derby. The Museum welcomes over 250,000 visitors annually; a large percentage of those visitors come from outside of Kentucky, journeying from across the country and the world.

Position

Purpose:

The primary purpose for this position is to work closely with the Director of Human Resources to assist in the administration of Human Resource programs including, but not limited to, recruitment, retention, training, and employee engagement. This position will report to the Director of Human Resources. This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Functions/Accountabilities:
  • Assists with updating, maintaining, and assuring compliance with Derby Museum Personnel Manual.
  • Assists in recruiting, interviewing, and facilitating the hiring of qualified job applicants for open positions; collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
  • Conducts or acquires background checks and employee eligibility verifications.
  • Assists with developing, maintaining, and managing employee orientation and training programs.
  • Helps to advance and guide professional development and training for museum staff.
  • Maintains the museum’s monthly newsletter.
  • Assists the performance evaluation process while providing guidance to team leaders.
  • Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs including but not limited to annual compliance management; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Administers the Museum uniforms for all staff.
  • Maintains general knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, new technologies in HR, talent managements, and employment law. Applies this knowledge to communicate changes in policy practices, and resources to upper management.
  • Supports strategic objectives.
  • Additional responsibilities, as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • At least one year of human resource management experience required.
  • Experience working in a retail, hospitality, or related industry preferred.
  • Understanding of HR laws such as EEO, ERISA, ADA, FMLA, etc.
  • Competent communicator with regard for confidential information.
  • Strong relationship management and cultural awareness.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and problem‑solving ability.
  • Detail oriented with ability to manage multiple projects at a time.
  • Must be able to sufficiently pass a criminal background check.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
Work Schedule:

Approximately 40 hours per week during operation hours of 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (open all days of the week). Mandatory overtime and flexible scheduling during the week leading up to and including Derby week, specifically Thurby, Oaks, and Derby.

Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk, and climb stairs. This individual will be required to lift packages up to 25 lbs. The employee is required to have non‑standard workday hours during the spring and fall sessions. All indoor spaces are air‑conditioned, although some job duties may take place outside, or in another non‑climate‑controlled space.
