Job Description
Position Summary and Purpose
This position prepares patients and assists in performing diagnostic and specific therapeutic cardiac catheterization procedures under the direct supervision of critical care RNs, RRT and Cardiologist. Provides safe, quality patient care based upon defined standards of care for patient populations including adults and geriatrics.
Essential Functions
- Responsible for ensuring top quality diagnostic images with minimal Patient, Physician and Staff Radiation exposure.
- Turn in monthly dosimetry badges so readings can be reported, checked and posted monthly by the Radiation Safety Officer.
- Assist in fluoroscoping all lead aprons and thyroid shields annually to ensure their integrity.
- Provide top quality diagnostic images for physician review.
- Exercise pre-procedure teaching to both the patient and the patient’s family prior to and during the procedure.
- Prepare the patient for pre and post catheterization and electrophysiology procedures.
- Obtain vital signs, assess heart rhythm, pedal/brachial pulses, attach the patient to the E.K.G. monitor and levels transducer with accurate documentation on the Patient Chart.
- Shave and prepare the appropriate entry site according to departmental procedures.
- Apply dressing to puncture site, ensuring that no bleeding or hematoma occurs during the healing process and instruct the patient on post procedural care.
- Utilize sterile technique in the preparation and maintenance of delicate instrumentation necessary for all catheterization procedures.
- Scrub and assist Cardiologist in the performance of procedures as requested.
- Operate physiological monitoring system with the ability to balance and calibrate each channel according to any relevant procedures performed in the laboratory.
- Assist in Code 300s and resuscitation of the patient as needed.
Other Functions
- Assist in preparing the room for cases as demonstrated by a smooth workflow and lack of complaints.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to operate all Cardiovascular/Electrophysiology laboratory equipment.
- Ensure that consents for procedure are properly filled out and signed.
- Complete protocol sheet during the procedure noting each step taken and the time.
- Document patient case information in the documentation system and ensure items are listed for proper charge.
- Clean the catheterization area and table between cases.
- Replenish supplies in each laboratory as needed.
- Transport patients to and from the cardiovascular laboratory.
- Participate in the mandatory call schedule and complete scheduled cases prior to the end of the work day as required by the Cardiovascular/Electrophysiology laboratory Supervisor or his/her designee.
- Maintain accurate, thorough and legible documentation of the information obtained during the procedure.
- Maintain compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct.
- Comply with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Education
- Graduate of an accredited Cardiovascular Technology Program. (required)
- RCIS certification or acquired within 18 months of employment. (required)
Experience
- 6 months work experience in Cardiac Cath lab (preferred)
Certification
- BLS (required)
- Preferred ACLS or acquired within 90 Days
