Job DescriptionThe Mammography Technologist performs mammography and other radiographic examinations according to established protocols set forth by the medical director. The Mammography Technologist maintains a high degree of accuracy in radiographic positioning and exposure technique. The Mammography Technologist maintains knowledge and awareness of radiation protection and safety during all radiographic examinations. The Mammography Technologist prepares for and assists the radiologist with intricate radiographic examinations.
The Mammography Technologist will prepare and administer contrast media in accordance with hospital policy and procedure as well as state and federal regulations.
- Uses consistent and appropriate techniques to gather relevant information pertinent to the examination being performed, including correct patient identification and order verification.
- Assesses patient to determine and develop an action plan for completing the procedure.
- Performs pre- and post-exam patient education pertinent to the exam being performed.
- Produces radiographs according to established protocols within the Breast Care Center with a high degree of accuracy.
- Evaluates radiographs for technical accuracy and diagnostic quality.
- Demonstrates good radiation safety practices during radiographic examinations to include use of lead shields, collimation and determining pregnancy status of women of childbearing years.
- Performs Mammography quality control tests as stated by ACR and MQSA standards.
- Ensures that assigned areas are kept clean, neat, and orderly.
- Ensures examinations are complete to include films and appropriate paperwork are together, and exam logged in computer system.
- Instructs Radiologic Technology students in radiographic positioning, technique, and film critique.
- Attends and participates in department staff meetings and in-services.
- Assists in training new personnel in hospital and department procedures.
- Takes an active role in gaining and maintaining proficiency in hospital and radiology equipment and information systems needed in performance of job responsibilities.
- Presents a positive image of the hospital and department.
- Assists in quality improvement programs in the department.
- Maintains appropriate credentials needed for clinical practice and ensures a current copy is maintained in department/hospital files.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education:
Associate degree in Radiology (required). Bachelor degree in Radiology (preferred).
- Prefer 1-year recent experience as a General Radiographer
- ARRT Registered
- KY Radiation Operator certification (KBMIRT)
- Mammography registry within 1 year of employment (required)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required)
