Position: Police Lieutenant (PROMOTIONAL)

Overview

THIS POSITION IS ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT LMPD POLICE SERGEANTS WHO MEET THE QUALIFICATIONS LISTED UNDER THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS SECTION BELOW.

The purpose of this position is to supervise a departmental unit or shift through subordinate supervisors. Investigate complaints and respond to requests for police assistance. This class works under administrative supervision, developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reports major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.

  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.

  • Monitors runs of subordinates to ensure that all runs are responded to in a timely manner and to ensure subordinates receive proper assistance in handling emergencies.

  • Monitors radio transmissions of and responds to major incidents.

  • Reviews subordinates’ reports, activities and performance to ensure compliance with Police standard operating procedures, laws, and ordinances.

  • Provides technical assistance, advice, and instruction regarding proper Police procedures, techniques, and methods, and federal, state, and local laws.

  • Monitors staffing levels to ensure there is sufficient Police protection.

  • Responds to public concerns and questions regarding interpretation of laws, police procedures, crimes, and requests for Police assistance.

  • Prepares, maintains and interprets reports, statistical data and other information regarding unit activities to identify trends in crime and ensure adherence to laws and standard operating procedures.

  • Investigates alleged misconduct or criminal activity of police officers reported by the public.

  • Checks care and maintenance of equipment.

  • Assists a commanding officer in the daily operation of a functional division.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be a permanent employee and currently be in the rank of Police Sergeant.

  • Two (2) years of continuous service as a Sergeant in the Louisville Metro Police Department;

OR

  • One (1) year as a Sergeant AND a minimum of 15 years as a police officer in the Louisville Metro Police Department.

The requirement for years of service must be met on or before August 7, 2026. Any current Police Sergeants who do not complete their probationary period by that date will NOT be placed on the eligibility list.

OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Must wear personal protective and safety equipment as mandated by OSHA.

  • Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment.

  • Must complete forty (40) hours of annual in-service training.

  • Must be on 24-hour call

  • Must be eligible for certification as a State Peace Officer.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

  • Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check.
