Position: Engineering Technician I/II/III (Grade 14/15/16)

  • Engineering Technician I: $51,459.20-$76,502.40
  • Engineering Technician II: $55,265.60-$82,867.20
  • Engineering Technician III: $63,897.60-$97,427.20
Engineering Technician I

Responsibilities: Provides technical and administrative support related to routine privately and publicly funded wastewater, stormwater, and flood protection infrastructure projects under direct oversight by a staff PE. Prepares computer aided drafting and design (CADD) drawings for wastewater, stormwater, and flood protection infrastructure projects. Supports internal and external stakeholder meetings in various settings. Assists with basic project management activities. Assists with technical analysis activities, ensuring adherence to MSD specifications/design standards and appropriate local, state, and federal regulations/guidelines.

Receives plan submittal applications. Reviews design calculations, construction plans, and technical specifications. Reviews shop drawings and new product submittals. Researches restrictions on building lots associated with drainage, grading and floodplain management. Assists with implementation of programmatic initiatives related to KPDES Permit compliance, Consent Decree compliance, asset management, USACE Flood Protection System operation and maintenance, Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit compliance, Green Infrastructure planning, Community Rating System (CRS) Program implementation, Floodplain Management planning and watershed master planning.

Provides technical and administrative support related to the Plumbing Modification Program. Performs field inspection and testing of sewer backflow prevention installations and disconnections of improper private plumbing. Ensures that plumbing contractor's work complies with MSD specifications and regulating agency requirements. Compiles records and reports on the backflow installations utilizing Hansen software and LOJIC Geographic Information System. Assists with walk-in customers.

Actively performs quality assurance reviews for own work products, along with those of divisional staff of which they are processing, evaluating for completeness, grammar, punctuation, and accuracy. Maintains polite, professional, and tactful communication skills in person, over the phone, and through written communication. Submits records for working files and final retention per MSD policy and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of basic mathematics principles, land surveying techniques, and general construction practices/methods; knowledge of MSD Design Manual, Standard Drawings and Standard Specifications, Metropolitan Subdivision Regulations and Zoning, Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control (EPSC) and Local Regulatory Floodplain and other environmental regulations; skill in operating a PC, computer aided drafting and design (CADD) software and associated Windows environment software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite, etc.);

skill in oral and written communication; ability to read, interpret and discuss detailed construction plans and topo maps; ability to manage, plan and effectively prioritize multiple projects and initiatives; ability to analyze problems and develop reasonable solutions; ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in decision‑making; ability to work in a team environment; ability to be courteous and helpful under pressure;

ability to work under heavy surges in workload and deadline pressure; ability to work 24-hour emergency response, various shifts and weekends.

Education and Experience: Associate degree in engineering technology (civil, mechanical, electrical, construction) or a related field; no related experience required; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must have safe work and driving habits. Must obtain Plan Reviewer/Preparer EPSC Certification within 6 months.
