Lead Payload Engineer – Earth Observation | Colorado | Hybrid
Are you a technical leader with a passion for space systems and imaging payloads? One of our most exciting clients is pioneering satellite operations in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO), pushing boundaries in ultra-high-resolution Earth imagery for both commercial and defense applications.
They’re looking for a Lead Payload Engineer to take the reins on a next-gen electro-optical payload system, overseeing its development across design, integration, test, and operations. This isn’t just oversight – it’s hands-on engineering and leadership in equal measure.
What You’ll Be Doing- Own the full lifecycle of an advanced payload system from concept to orbit
- Lead cross-functional collaboration with other subsystem teams
- Manage subcontractors and internal payload team members
- Drive payload design, integration, calibration, and test campaigns
- Collaborate on image processing pipelines and performance simulations
- Shape the future roadmap for space-based sensing technologies
- 12+ years in payload or satellite engineering with a strong hands-on track record
- 5+ years in leadership roles, managing teams and complex program schedules
- Deep knowledge of EO/IR systems, payload commissioning, and LEOP operations
- Strong background in systems engineering, requirements allocation, and spacecraft interfaces
- Comfortable translating technical detail into actionable roadmaps and stakeholder updates
