Web Developer, The National WWII Museum - New Orleans, LA

The National WWII Museum is currently seeking a Web Developer. The Web Developer contributes to the development, management, maintenance, optimization, and growth of the institution’s web presence. Through content-driven websites, web-based applications, and digital solutions, this position plays both a technical and strategic role in ensuring the Museum provides a top-tier digital experience that not only reflects its reputation as the #1 attraction in New Orleans but also positions it as the go-to resource for WWII content, attracting online audiences from across the globe.

Reporting directly to the Associate Vice President of Web Development and Digital Strategy, the Web Developer manages all aspects of building, maintaining, and updating institutional websites with a focus on enhancing the user experience, functionality across devices, information architecture, search engine optimization, and accessibility to meet Museum goals. The ideal candidate thrives in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment and enjoys working closely with other Museum colleagues and third-party developers to manage web-based projects from conception to launch.

Requirements

  • Front-end and back-end website development as well as ongoing maintenance, security patches, module updates, and testing of the Museum’s various properties (Drupal, Word Press, Symphony).
  • Develop custom themes, layouts, and templates.
  • Manage the continuing improvement of the Museum’s website functionality and user experience.
  • Ensure security, scalability, reliability, and performance of web applications across the tech stack.
  • Provide support for the Museum’s robust email communications, including scheduling, strategy, development, database management, distribution, and optimization.
  • Collaborate closely with the AVP, museum leadership, IT, creative, and the marketing team to ensure project deadlines and goals are communicated and met and align web development initiatives with overall digital strategy including accessibility, brand and design standards.
  • Collaborate with other departments on various initiatives including but not limited to the Museum’s efforts to digitize its collections, event live streams, as well as multimedia interactive experiences and displays such as the Dog Tag Experience.
  • Stay on top of digital trends and best practices to ensure Museum web products remain up to date and have a competitive advantage.
  • Undertake other projects as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • BS/MS in computer science or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of five years of experience in full-stack web development, with a strong digital portfolio showcasing previous projects.
  • Expert proficiency in building and maintaining responsive sites in Drupal and Word Press, including experience with version updates, plug-in development, customization, theme extensions, API integration, and troubleshooting.
  • Extensive experience with PHP and PHP production frameworks.
  • Experience with MVC development and template creation for content management systems (experience with Drupal and Word Press is a plus).
  • Experience in API integration including consuming data via RESTful APIs, managing JSON data transfer (CRUD, integrations, security, etc.).
  • Firm understanding of web standards, compliance, security, and accessibility.
  • Strong familiarity with web server maintenance, particularly Pantheon and Liquid Web cloud sites.
  • Experience with the Blackbaud suite of products, particularly CRM features.
  • Experience with DNS management.
  • Experience with GIT or other version control systems.
  • Comfortable with terminal and Linux administration.
  • Acute attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to articulate complex concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Passion for great design, user experience, and site usability.
  • Tenacious, innovative mindset with the ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating reliability and accountability.
