Job Summary

The lineworker performs all aspects of the lineworker job function including maintaining and building overhead and underground electrical facilities. Work includes enclosed spaces, manholes, vaults, and all levels of learning, performing, and/or leading other line workers. A Live Safe mindset is required to mitigate hazards.

Job Duties /Responsibilities Lineworker Helper
  • Learn and understand human performance and safety tools used in day‑to‑day work.
  • Drive and operate trucks and equipment including Aerial Bucket, Bread Vans, and Digger Derrick Trucks.
  • Read and understand job prints and sketches with reference to distribution standards.
Lineworker I
  • Proper use and care of all rubber goods and PPE.
  • Perform confined space and bucket rescue tasks and properly set up and operate aerial baskets and digger derrick trucks.
  • Lift, rig, and tie knots to set up work in manholes and vaults.
  • Cover secondary lines and perform energized work on secondary voltage lines.
  • Use meters to perform tests and install 3‑and 4‑wire secondary lines.
  • Identify substation and underground equipment.
Lineworker II
  • Perform underground tasks, including energized primary cover up to 34,500 volts.
  • Understand transformer theories including bank installations, tap settings, and identifying and constructing multiple secondary voltage applications.
  • Learn and perform simple primary voltage switching (up to 34,500 volts) tasks and applications.
  • Learn and perform work including troubleshooting, splicing, and repair on energized underground secondary cable (120/208) circuits.
  • Learn and identify Network Grids.
  • Learn and perform splicing of primary underground cable.
Lineworker III
  • Perform all tasks included in Helper through Lineworker II.
  • Build and maintain underground residential and network grid distribution circuits, including preparing/operating pad mount switch gear, installing and troubleshooting URD circuits, and switching/tagging URD primary cable.
  • Learn three‑phase primary tasks to include safe operation and removal/installation of automatic transfer switches and manual switching schemes.
  • Learn and perform switching of 3‑phase distribution circuits in vaults and substations.
  • Learn and perform troubleshooting, repair, and phasing of network protectors (120/208 V).
Lineworker Sr
  • Perform all tasks included in Helper through Lineworker III.
  • Demonstrate strong leadership capabilities including indirect crew leadership.
  • Learn and perform advanced primary voltage switching (up to 34,500 volts) tasks and applications.
  • Perform advanced lineworker tasks including construction of vaults, locate and correct backfeed situations, troubleshoot and repair energized 277/480 V network protectors, and automatic transfer switches.
  • Install communication equipment (secondary monitoring) in vaults.
  • Perform complex troubleshooting of underground circuits using VLF, capacitor discharge, TDR, and arc reflexion methods.
  • Knowledge and understanding of network protector relay schemes and secondary mesh network systems.
All Levels Must Be Able To Perform
  • Work on‑call after hours.
  • Maintain a well‑organized job site to ensure safety.
  • Complete and perform mandated training such as First Aid, CPR, etc.
Minimum Requirements
  • Education
    :
    High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience
    :
    • Lineworker Mech, Helper - 0–1 year.
    • Lineworker Mech, I - 6 months to 1 year.
    • Lineworker Mech, II - 1.5 to 2 years.
    • Lineworker Mech, III - 2.5 to 3 years.
    • Lineworker Mech, Sr - 3.5 to 4 years.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities
    :
