Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
As a Mechanic 3 in Fleet Services, you’ll play an essential role in keeping our city moving by ensuring the reliability of a wide range of vehicles and heavy equipment—from light‑duty trucks and fire apparatus to complex diesel engines and hydraulic systems. This position is perfect for a highly skilled and detail‑oriented technician who enjoys diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on diverse types of machinery.
You’ll have the chance to lead by example, stepping in to support your team and even taking on supervisory duties when needed. Working in a collaborative environment, you’ll utilize advanced diagnostic tools and your extensive expertise to resolve challenging mechanical issues, ensuring safety and operational efficiency across the city’s fleet. This role not only requires technical proficiency but also offers the opportunity to specialize and gain valuable experience across five unique shops focused on heavy equipment, light vehicles, fire assets, body repairs, and light equipment maintenance.
This is highly technical work in the diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance of cars, trucks, and heavy equipment. Work is supervised and assisted as needed by a higher‑level mechanic or a supervisor.

- Completes preventive maintenance on vehicles, trailers, or heavy equipment, such as oil changes, tire rotation, replacing filters, servicing transmissions, lubricating chassis and drive lines.
- Performs engine and transmission diagnostics with scan tools or laptop computers. Conducts test drives to verify drivability complaints and to verify the repairs made.
- Diagnose and repair electrical systems.
- Diagnose and repair air and hydraulic brake systems.
- Diagnose and repair automatic and manual transmission drivability issues.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic system issues including hydraulic pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, and other components on heavy vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnose and repair driveline and suspension systems.
- Diagnose and repair heating and air conditioning systems.
- Diagnose, repair, rebuild, and replace diesel and gas engines.
- Remove, replace, and modify mufflers, tailpipes and other exhaust components.
- Tow vehicles and equipment using a roll‑back and sling‑type wrecker.
- Maintains written record of work performed.
- Assumes the responsibilities of supervisor in his or her absences.
- Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle.

- Thorough knowledge of all tools and equipment used in the trade and the ability to use these tools to perform repair work on vehicles/equipment.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Ability to weld and cut using gas or electrical equipment.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply information contained in technical repair manuals and electronic diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to climb onto equipment and make repairs as high as 25' in height.
- Ability to lift, bend, and twist while making repairs to vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Ability to tolerate exposure to fluids and solvents in vehicle repair work.
- Ability to perform continuous manual and physical labor while standing on cement floor.
- Ability to lift and carry bulky objects weighing up to 50 pounds (heavier objects with the assistance of another person) for distances up to 100 feet.
- Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of pressure using tools that tighten, loosen, or cut.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and employees of other departments.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively orally or in writing.
- Assumes the responsibilities of supervisor in his or her absences.
- Must be highly proficient in utilizing diagnostic scan tools and other troubleshooting devises.
- A valid Kansas driver’s license is required.
